Student Prentice McHoan carries out his recently deceased grandmother's request to find out what happened to his Uncle Rory, who disappeared seven years before. After meeting Rory's girlfriend Janice, Prentice discovers he had been working on a murder mystery novel called The Crow Road. Janice gives Prentice the computer discs containing the novel. Prentice starts to search for Rory with the help of his friend Ashley.

The McHoan family is devasted at Kenneth's death and Uncle Hamish blames himself. Prentice is unhappy as well, more so when a pregnant Verity arrives at the funeral with Lewis and they announce they are to bemarried. At the funeral Janice tells Prentice that Rory was on his way to Gallach to speak to Kenneth after discovering a family secret. Ashley helps Prentice discover the information on Rory's computer discs concerning Aunt Fiona.

Prentice finds that the jigsaw is falling into place as he discovers Rory's final secret about the McHoan family. He tells Ashley, but she is sceptical and tells him to get on with his life.
