In an elegant Spanish-style apartment building in the trendy Melrose neighborhood of Los Angeles, a diverse group of 20-somethings have formed a close-knit surrogate family. Sydney Andrews is the landlady, still beautiful at 40, and a central figure in the lives of all her tenants, especially handsome and rebellious David Breck. Sydney started an affair with David despite her turbulent history with his estranged father, Dr. Michael Mancini. Both father and son learned through experience that Sydney was not above using blackmail to control people. Another tenant, high-powered publicist Ella Simms, once considered Sydney her mentor, but their friendship was destroyed by betrayal, and Sydney threatened to evict Ella and ruin her career. Sydney also played a pivotal role in the career of Auggie Kirkpatrick. After they met at an AA meeting, she became Auggie's sponsor and encouraged his dream to become a chef. Now a successful sous chef at the trendy restaurant Coal, Auggie has been avoiding Sydney since she began drinking again. The other tenants include Lauren Yung, a medical student in desperate need of money to pay her student loans, and Jonah Miller, an aspiring filmmaker who has just proposed to his live-in girlfriend Riley Richmond, a first-grade teacher. The newest tenant, 18-year-old Violet Foster, has just arrived in LA with her own secret connection to Sydney. When a bloody body is found floating in the courtyard pool, David is the leading suspect. However, as the police are soon to discover, almost everyone living at Melrose Place had a reason to want the deceased out of the way.

Practically the episode that ruined any credibility that Sydney's death was faked in 1997.
The reason this happened, and it was mentioned by a stand-in who was part of the body bag scene where Michael zipped it shut in a flashback the night of Sydney's accident in 1997, was that the crew were all watching tapes of the season 5 finale and most likely season 6 premiere. "How are we gonna mention her death was faked and make it look feasible?"
The crew did not watch the original and were not fans in any way. Furthermore, in later episodes they said Sydney worked with Amanda with Artwork and in the Pilot she was the owner of the building. In all reality, Amanda would never have hired Sydney in any way as she destroyed D&D Advertising with Craig and Amanda hated her and Sydney was dirt poor to buy Melrose Place and even more, renovate it the way it looked in the reboot. Alone, 3million-5 million most likely or more would have been needed for the renovations and the purchase. Sydney had little to nothing in her account.
While Martin Abbott camp in season 3 of the original said they'd return someday and kidnap her, in no way did they have money for Sydney to steal to buy Melrose Place when she returned to town years later.
If producers had watched a few episodes before season 5's finale, they'd see that Carter Galvestone was rich and he could have stayed in LA and seen Sydney get married secretly instead of going back to San Francisco to take over his Computer Company. Sydney and Carter were to leave LA all together a few episodes before the season 5 finale, but he saw she didn't love him as much as he thought she did.
In the end, the crew, even though they saw the season 5 finale, made up utter nonsense.
Originally, the night of Sydney's wedding, Michael Mancini was thrown through a wall divider at Burns Mancini by Peter Burns. He was rushed to the hospital and confined to a bed with Megan at his bedside. Neither attended Sydney's wedding and neither left the hospital room. Michael's hands were severely cut up. As season 6 began he had full bandages on them and little by little the bandages came off as he was confined to a wheelchair in the season 6 premiere after he had hand surgery.
As Sydney's wedding ended, Samantha Reily's father kidnapped Samantha from her job at the store, they got in her car, and he was gonna drive it to Mexico to escape the law. Samantha said she wanted to be dropped off at the church first where Sydney was getting married, and her Dad could take the car and go anywhere he wants to. Accidentally, Sydney is hit by the car and dies.
In the reboot, it is shown that Sydney is wheeled into the ER. Michael is up and working, with "light bandages" on his hands. No way he explains how he got them. She says someone from her past wants to kill her husband "Craig, most likely". This entire scene made zero sense at all when relating back to the 1997 season finale of the original. In no way did Sydney know Jim Reily, and Sydney's death was a freak accident.
In the end, it could have been done easier by saying Carter stalked her. He saw her get hit, paid the doctor off to say Sydney died, and took her away to the Island they wanted to go to. They lived there for a few years and he died and she inherited his money. That would have been the most feasible way to explain her faked death and that she had the money to both purchase and renovate Melrose Place the way she did.
