Today the clock is ticking for the crews of all three helicopters, as they strive to reach and treat seriously injured patients within what's known as the Golden Hour. If a patient can't be treated within the first sixty minutes of their accident, their chances of survival will plummet.

But often hurdles get in the way of the doctors and paramedics, dramatically slowing down the time it takes to get to a patient. Lee is a rear seat passenger in a car which has been in a fast head on crash on the A1. He's lost sensation from the chest down and Dr Simon le Clerc needs to get to him fast - but first he has to wait patiently for the fire crews to safely extract Lee from the car.

In Cumbria, Alan has suffered a possible heart attack and Dr Suzie needs to get to him immediately. But Alan is halfway up a mountain, where the helicopter is struggling to land. The crews are pushed to the limit to treat their patients within the Golden Hour, sometimes several times in the same day - a measure of their true dedication to saving our lives.

Episode: 1x01 | Airdate: Apr 17, 2009

Braving the Storm

Stormy weather threatens to ground the Pride of Cumbria helicopter high in the mountains of the Lake District while asthmatic patient Jim lies shivering and injured on the cold rocks; in the east the Guardian of the North helicopter struggles to get to 17-year-old Emma whose car has been impaled on a cattle grid severely breaking both her legs. And just when the storms finally abate, the whipped-up North Sea drags a coastguard out to sea then crushes him against rocks, leaving him seriously injured. The land ambulance can't reach him - so his only chance of getting urgent treatment is in the hands of the Great North Air Ambulance. The problem is, the high waves near the patient might be too dangerous for the helicopter to land without bringing disaster on them all.

Frontline Doctors

Episode: 1x02 | Airdate: Jun 19, 2009

Frontline Doctors

In this installment, the Doctors of the Great North Air Ambulance are tested to the limit. On the east side of the country, newcomer Doctor Matt Cheeseman is thrown into the deep end - he has to perform an advanced medical procedure at two serious accidents, not once, but TWICE in the same day.

First he has to deal with a head-on crash, which has left a car driver unconscious and seriously hurt. Matt has to anaesthetise the driver in order to fly him to A&E, but he's never done this complex procedure out of hospital before. Later in the day, Matt has to do it all over again with a farmer who's been trampled by a herd of bulls. But when one of the bulls escapes, the whole operation comes under threat.

Meanwhile in Cumbria, Dr Suzie Pritchard tries to assist a seriously hurt motorbike, but in doing so injures herself so badly it threatens her career as a flying doctor.

Stranded

Episode: 1x03 | Airdate: Jun 26, 2009

Stranded

At the Lake District base of the Great North Air Ambulance, the crew is alerted to an emergency by Mountain Rescue. A lone walker is not only injured, but has also been stranded for hours high on an isolated mountain. Meanwhile, not one, but two motocross bikers are seriously injured during an event on a remote part of the Pennines. Every year the helicopter crews embark on hundreds of missions to save seriously injured people stranded in remote locations, miles from the nearest road. These are places only the air ambulance can reach. But for the pilots, landing their helicopters on steep and rocky terrain can be the biggest challenge of all - and in this episode, the pilots of the Great North Air Ambulance are tested to their limits.

Killer Country

The twisting fast roads of Northern England prove potentially fatal for two motorists who hit each other head on. Once the Guardian of the North helicopter arrives on scene, Dr Jeremy Henning and paramedic Jane Peacock are left with a difficult choice: there is only one space on the helicopter so only one patient can travel with them.

Across the country, the crew of the Pride of Cumbria are urgently trying to find an injured mountain biker missing in the winding forest tracks beneath them. With no one to guide them to him, the crew become more and more concerned for his safety.

Dr Jeremy is tested to the limit again when called to attend to four-year-old Ryan, whose family car has collided with a tree. Ryan has a possible brain injury and needs to get to hospital immediately by helicopter - but minutes into the journey he starts to deteriorate, desperately worrying Dr Jeremy Henning.

Kids In Danger

Three children are injured, putting extra pressure on the doctors and paramedics. Not only are they all parents themselves, but also childrens' bodies are much more delicate than adults', so the potential for complications is high.

Four-year-old Alex has been run over by the family car, leaving him with possibly serious internal injuries; six-year-old Luca has come head-first off his bike, smashing his face on the ground; and 16-year-old Katie has also fallen, but off a horse, and at speed.

For the crews of the Air Ambulance, it is a tricky balancing act, dealing with injured and frightened children as well as with their understandably distressed parents.

Biker Country

The Pride of Cumbria helicopter has been called to an emergency in the Lake District - a biker has been thrown off her motorcycle, completely shattering her ankle. On the other side of the country, the doctors and paramedics fly to the rescue of pedestrian Luke, who has collided with a motorbike, the force pushing his brace completely through his cheek.

The North of England is biker country - twisting single carriageway roads that weave through the hills and valleys attracting bike enthusiasts in their thousands. But while most will get home safely, hundreds are involved in nasty and painful accidents every year, and it's often up to the Great North Air Ambulance to pick up the pieces.

It is a sunny bank holiday morning, and cars are hitting the roads in their thousands for a weekend break. But for some holidaymakers, a country jaunt can turn into a nightmare, as the crews of the Great North Air Ambulance know only too well.

The Guardian of the North is called to a mysterious accident, where a woman has been discovered, having crashed in the holiday rush. She is lying bleeding in a wrecked car, and no one knows how long she has been there. A jolly trip to the countryside ends in a disastrous village crash for four teenagers; and when two bikers collide in a remote part of Cumbria, the air ambulance has to join forces with the giant Sea King helicopter in a desperate attempt to reach them.

The crews of the Great North Air Ambulance are pushed to the limit dealing with the most common accident of all in the region - crashes. Crashing at high speed can cause some of the most serious injuries the doctors and paramedics have to deal with.

Motorcyclist Colin Banks has been so seriously hurt following a crash with a bus that Air Ambulance doctor Matt Cheeseman has to perform surgery on scene, while John Hodgeson has come off his off-road motorbike at over 100 miles an hour and is so critically ill that Dr Jeremy Henning has to anaesthetise him on scene in order to save his life.

Meanwhile, five young lads climb out of a completed wrecked car following an accident on the A66, dazed and confused at how they could have survived - although one of them is left with a neck pain which is seriously concerning aircrew paramedic Andy Dalton.
