Masters of Sex - Episode Guide

Dr. William Masters, a successful doctor of obstetrics and gynecology, begins his controversial study of human sexuality. Dr. Masters recruits Virginia Johnson to be his secretary, but she quickly advances to be a valuable associate.

The Provost shuts down the research when he hears about the couples study and Masters is forced to move it elsewhere. Dr. Masters blames Virginia and fires her, but keeps her on until he can find a replacement.

A woman pregnant with quadruplets comes to the hospital and Dr. Haas lobbies for the case. A female gynecologist joins the staff. Both Dr. Masters and his wife learn a secret and both get what they want.

Both Bill and Virginia have unexpected and unwelcome visitors at home. With the study back in the hospital, new participants are recruited. Ethan struggles to forget his feelings for Virginia.

William and Libby experience personal tragedy. Masters decides to pair Austin with a stranger. Virginia struggles with her parenting due to her long hours. Ethan's relationship with Vivian takes the next step, whether he likes it or not.

Bill and Libby vacation in Miami after losing the baby. Virginia attends a visiting doctor's speech and decides to investigate one of the claims on her own. Austin struggles with the reason for his non-performance in the study.

Virginia and William ramp up their participation in the study. Libby bypasses William and pressures Ethan to resume the treatments. Austin and Margaret ramp up their tryst leading to differing expectations. Ethan decides to commit to Vivian.

Virginia and Dr. Masters move on to filming involuntary reactions during the study, with Jane as usual being the first subject. Ethan reveals information about his heritage that threatens their relationship.

A former study participant comes forward with news of her pregnancy. Ethan learns he has been effectively fired, but not for the reason he thought.

Masters and Libby compile study information for hospital-wide presentation; DePaul and Johnson travel to a medical convention; Virginia's ex returns finds Ethan playing father to his children.

Dr. Masters' big day is at hand after 12 months of studies. Without Virginia as a voice of moderation will Bill's pitch hit the mark? Margaret Scully is confronted with her husbands homosexuality and investigates what is involved with his 'treatment'. Dr. Austin Langham has a job offer from L.A and the climax to the episode sees Virginia Johnson reading the notes from Dr. William Masters presentation at home in the rain, to hear a knock at the door.

Following Bill's declaration in season 1 finale, Bill and Virginia resume their professional and personal relationship - both asserting it is to further the cause of their work. Virginia breaks the news to Ethan and Bill tries to be there for Libby and their new baby but finds it hard. Bill is struggling with getting his career back on track and Virginia is still working for Dr. DePaul but hungers for more. Scully is determined to succeed in his "therapy", but Margaret will bear no more illusions in her life.

Masters begins a new job at Memorial Hospital - under Betty's terms - only to find his boss insisting he leave Virginia behind in favor of a handpicked secretary. Johnson, meanwhile, still alienated at Maternity, is torn between pressing Masters to rehire her and staying by DePaul's side as her condition worsens.

Virginia unearths Masters' troubled childhood during a secret rendezvous.

Johnson tries to cover when she and Masters are seen by Langham leaving a hotel together after an evening tryst. Later, Masters attempts to bring Johnson aboard as his assistant at his new post; and Betty tries to conceal her infertility from Gene, over Masters' objections.

The study costs Masters his obstetrics and gynaecology practice. Johnson struggles with DePaul.

After Hendricks bans Masters from using black participants in his study, Masters contacts a journalist to promote his efforts, using the debunking of sexual stereotypes as the lure. Johnson is forced to accept DePaul's choice to end her chemotherapy treatments. Gene uncovers the truth about Betty and Helen's relationship. Libby fires Coral after discovering she lied about Robert.

In the wake of Masters' discovery that Johnson has continued to have romantic relationships with other men, he becomes impotent without her knowledge and cuts off their sexual work together. He tries to keep his new clinic solvent over the course of three years by borrowing against his house, offering medical services to the hotel - and finally accepting money from his mother.

Johnson attempts to treat a woman on her own. Libby witnesses a hate crime.

Virginia continues to impersonate a patient's case history in order to glean advice from a psychiatrist. Betty and Masters' attempt to remedy Lester's impotence by hiring a prostitute rattles him even further. Libby gets the third degree when she offers her eyewitness testimony regarding the beaten man. And Barbara Sanders wrestles with an unsettling diagnosis that exposes a chain of secrets and causes Masters and Johnson to clash over their treatment strategy.

Masters learns of a rival study and calls in a public relations expert to help brand his work with Johnson. Virginia, having finally learned of Masters' sexual difficulties, is invigorated by the prospect of finding a cure. Determined to prove her worth to Robert, Libby canvases a tenement for a rent strike. Plus, Langham is stunned when Flo informs him that he has to have sex with her in order to keep his job. And Barbara and Lester connect over their shared sexual dysfunctions.

A television crew arrives at the clinic to document Masters and Johnson's work treating sexual dysfunction. Masters considers the publicity premature, and himself unsuitable as a television presence. Virginia deals with the fallout of having prioritized her work over her parenting when George argues to take their children on a trip with his new wife. Plus, Libby finds in Robert an appreciation for what she has to offer. And Langham realizes there's no way out of his sexual contract with Flo.

Masters and Johnson feel ready to cure sexual dysfunction.

Season 3 begins with Masters and Johnson facing the press for the first time as they prepare to publish their study. As they do so, they recall last year's summer vacation when Bill was finishing work on their book, Virginia was facing parenting struggles, and Libby was pulling herself out from beneath a deep depression.
