The Outsider follows police detective Ralph Anderson, as he sets out to investigate the mutilated body of 11-year-old Frankie Peterson found in the Georgia woods. The mysterious circumstances surrounding this horrifying crime leads Ralph, still grieving the recent death of his own son, to bring in unorthodox private investigator Holly Gibney, whose uncanny abilities he hopes will help explain the unexplainable.

The book ending was spookier.

Okay, I get why Richard Price might want to kill off Ralph Anderson's son to emphasis detective's motivation to continue investigation by emerged association between his son and Frankie Peterson. Besides this character never entered the story and wasn't essential. Plus it adds up some content to the Price's series.
But why would you need to mess up a perfect embodiment of an established character (Holly Gibney by Justine Lupe) into a completely different supercomputer-like wunderkind in order to cut ties with other adjacent stories, which weren't even that much in play?
The only reason Holly kept her name contrary to Richard Price's plan to change it is Stephen King's commitment to the character.
