Ella is the head of the obstetrics department and is struggling not only with staff shortages but also in her love life. She is having an affair with Jerry, a married pediatrician. On the day that department manager Michael tells Ella there is absolutely no money for additional staff, she discovers that her fatigue has another cause.

Intern Willem's first day on the job gets off to a rocky start: midwife Louise refuses to supervise him. Ella takes Willem under her wing during the scheduled delivery of a stillborn baby. Resident Frederik, for his part, has trouble dealing with the authoritarian anesthesiologist Jacob. Meanwhile, Ella is struggling with her own pregnancy. She makes an appointment at the abortion clinic, but doesn't tell Jerry.

Vivi is Ella's mother and works at the same hospital. Vivi really enjoys that, but Ella doesn't. Maria is overwhelmed by her workload, while midwife Tina devotes a lot of time to supporting natural births. Jacob is unavailable just when he's needed most. Milad performs an ultrasound on Ella, after which she decides not to terminate the pregnancy.

During the team meeting, Jacob accuses nurse Trui of negligence. Ella is stunned to hear that Milad, her rock, is leaving for a private clinic. Intern Willem is finally allowed to assist with a delivery, but Louise ends up sending him out of the room. A confrontation is inevitable.

Jerry's teenage son, Sammie, comes to the hospital to ask some tough questions. Ella's mother, Vivi, is having surgery, and this affects Ella more than she expected. During the New Year's Eve party, Ella finally officially tells her coworkers about her pregnancy. Given Ella's baby bump, this comes as no surprise to anyone. It turns out Trui has been taking bets on who the father is. Meanwhile, Frederik receives some particularly bad news.

Milad is leaving the team. On his last day at work, he has to perform a difficult surgery on his colleague Aamina and deal with the aggression of an expectant father. Meanwhile, Willem gets to perform Ella's 20-week ultrasound, and department manager Michael gives his pregnant girlfriend Monica a tour, during which the stairs get just as much attention as the "placenta bin." Ella and Jerry declare their love for each other wholeheartedly.

Jacob confides his fears to Trui. Tina runs into an old school crush in the delivery room: Emmanuel. Emmanuel flirts during the delivery, creating a particularly awkward situation. Jerry's father tries to make him understand that by wanting to continue his relationship with Ella, he's not only destroying himself but also his family. Anne is in charge of scheduling, but when the computer system crashes, no one is scheduled to take over the next shift.

The waiting room is packed, and everyone is exhausted, but due to a system error, Ella and her team aren't being relieved. After an exhausting day shift, everyone now has to push through into the night. While assisting a heavily pregnant teenage girl, Ella is startled to feel her own contractions begin five weeks early. Willem is the only midwife available, but he's also the least experienced. A nerve-wracking finale.

Linda is working with Mia to find the cause of her intestinal problems. She also heads up the pediatric ward and prefers that her staff keep their personal lives separate from work. This preference is quickly put to the test when a miscommunication between Jerry and Ella results in their baby, Vivi, being passed from one set of arms to another across the ward. Meanwhile, Lasse takes care of little Vinnie, whose sister Zoë is in a coma following a drowning accident. The team is on edge, and the incident deeply affects everyone, especially Naima, who is currently required to attend therapy with Lasse due to her own traumatic childbirth experience.

Jamie comes in after an epileptic seizure that worries not only her, but especially her father. While on duty, Naima is unexpectedly confronted with her past when her ex-husband brings by their sick baby. The young intern Shirley gets to know the ward, where tensions between Agaath and Danny are mounting. Trui is moved by caring for a premature baby found in a dumpster. Mia struggles with the diagnosis following her colonoscopy, and Max is worried about his father, who seems to be hiding something. Ella and Jerry disagree over the excesses of Sam's adolescent behavior.

Jamie and Sam meet in the emergency room; he has a large wound and a vague story. Jerry is shocked especially when it turns out that Sam has been smoking weed but brushes it off as just some youthful mischief. Ella takes a very different view. Lasse's sessions with Naima are going well, but Lasse declares her treatment complete when she makes an intimate joke that causes more discomfort than she realizes. Jamie's test results look good, but something still feels off. The underage Paloma is treated as an emergency case, but she refuses to speak to anyone except Trui. Amanda makes a fool of herself with the healthcare clowns, and Max has to take care of a smelly baby.

Tahar is brought in unconscious and receives emergency treatment from Jerry. He's not thinking straight and instructs Shirley to administer an excessive dose of insulin, with all the consequences that entails. Meanwhile, the course on inappropriate behavior has begun. Fons has had a tumor removed, but he needs to undergo more tests just to be sure. Max is worried about his father. Jason needs to have a PICC line inserted, but he's too afraid to go through with it because of a misunderstanding. Jamie is back on the ward with a mysterious rash, but Max thinks he can make a diagnosis. Mia hopes to be able to go back to school. Trui is helping Paloma reunite with baby Henriëtte again.

Natasha is admitted to the hospital after an overdose; her sister Bo accompanies her as her caregiver. Bo refuses under any circumstances to have her mother called; Amanda is the only person she trusts. Jerry's relationship is falling apart, and on top of that, he learns that an investigation has been launched against him. Meanwhile, Linda is stressed out by mysterious personal phone calls. Max tries to get over his emotions by throwing himself into his dating life, but it doesn't help. Trui is having a hard time saying goodbye to baby Maya and, in the meantime, has to help Naima care for a mother and baby who don't want to be separated.

Gabi arrives with her parents due to throat problems and is placed in the same room as Mia, who is busy preparing for the school's Christmas show. Max tries to keep working, but his mind is on his father. Ella and Jerry have broken up for good, and Jerry has to face the consequences of his mistake. The hospital is struggling with staff shortages, forcing them to reassign personnel. Baby Nina is admitted with mysterious rashes and pain. Jamie is dealing with unpleasant side effects. Raphael stops by for a "climate protest," but his mother also needs help when her water breaks.

Nina's surgery went well and she's getting better and better, but Sjors points out that she still needs an MRI. The parents and staff disagree. Rens takes a leisurely walk with Danny. Dirk is back on the ward and tries to strike up a conversation with Zara, a new patient. Her parents are worried about her going through puberty. Mia can't participate in the school's Christmas show because of her surgery, but the staff puts on a variety show for her. Naima finds out that Lasse is leaving and confronts him about it. Shirley is called in to help on the ward; shortly after, Sam walks in he hears voices.

Sam was hit by a car on his way to the hospital and needs surgery right away, which also means Jerry has to get in touch with Ella and his ex-wife. Linda decides to stay that night and steals Max's bedding to make a bed for Rens in Lasse's office, which causes problems the next morning. Meanwhile, it turns out a mistake was made while scheduling Mia's surgery, which might prevent her from participating in the variety show, but Trui puts a stop to that. Douwe tries to facilitate a conversation between Finn and Emir's parents. Amanda tries to do the same for Jamie and her father.

Lasse has his first day on the job in the psychiatry department, where a patient named Jim is admitted in the midst of a psychotic episode. Linsie is admitted during a manic episode and is immediately drawn to Lasse. Intern Lara is offered a job, but doesn't seem happy about it.

Danny is suffering from acute depression, but feels he doesn't belong in a psychiatric ward. Lasse is struggling with his new job and with Linsie, whose manic episode seems to be getting worse. Bella's parents are coming to visit.

An aggressive drug tourist named Mr. Baker is brought in suffering from psychosis. Lara is assigned to supervise intern Jaap, but she can't stand him. Linsie's mania begins to give way to depression.

Thanks to electroconvulsive therapy, Ms. Carillo is making progress for the first time. She has a crush on intern Jaap, much to Lara's jealousy. Lasse goes out of his way for Gabriëlle, who resists any form of therapy. Sheila seems to have a history with new patient Dries.

After a relapse, Bella returns to the ward, and the team is trying to figure out a way forward for her. Lara is at her wits' end with her mother, Iris, who has ended up in the hospital's emergency room. Dorien is trying to get her life back on track in the midst of a divorce.

Peer, the obsessive-compulsive brother of pediatric nurse Trui, is admitted to the ward. Lasse gets help from Mirjam with Bella's therapy and, in the meantime, tries to convince Linsie to try medication. Enver asks a coworker out on a date.

The ward is thrown into turmoil by the admission of a minister. Linsie is dismissed from the ward, but doesn't want to go home just yet. An unexpected death affects all the staff members, and Lara struggles with the lie she told Sheila.

Elise takes charge of an aggressive Polish patient, but is reined in by Dr. Martens. Lara is back at the hospital because her mother was admitted to the ER with a heart attack. The team works hard to get her back to the ward.
