Martin Tupper, New York book editor and product of the first television generation, faces a crisis: his ex-wife-to-be, Judith, is demanding that he sign their divorce papers so that she can re-marry. Should he try to win her back, or is it time to get back in the dating game?

Can book editor Martin Tupper's day get any worse? It starts with a dose from an exterminator at 6:30AM, then losing his coat in a cab door, and progresses to being assaulted by a zoftig female author whose book he rejected. His pal Eddie fixes him up with a amorous 20 year old, but movie mad Martin ends up in an ER.

Worried that the divorce is the cause of Jeremy's poor concentration at school, Judith tells Martin that it's actually because of a crush on his teacher. After some wrangling with Judith, it's left to Martin to have 'the talk'.

Initially overjoyed by a whirlwind visit from his globe trotting baby sister 'Beano', Martin finds it difficult to accept that she's more grown up than he imagined; and unfortunately, his best friend Eddie is part of the problem.

After being admonished by an old school friend for not becoming a famous writer, Martin feels galvanized to pick up the quill again - but are his central characters a little too close to home?

Martin accidentally finds himself dating a controlling, unstable woman.

In order to secure a much needed vacation, Martin seduces a grieving widow for a tawdry book.

When Judith convinces Martin its time to split up their photographs, they take a trip down memory lane.

A co-worker dies and Martin gets scared. Suddenly, he wants to know how much time he has left himself and decides to visit a medium.

Martin sees his baby cousin for the first time in years and she's all grown up. Their elderly aunt catches them kissing and has a mild heart attack. She tells them she had similar feelings and reminds the kids to not act on them.

A meek author's manuscript is shredded by his vengeful wife, so he, Martin and Toby have to stay up all night to reassemble it to meet the deadline.

Martin insists on throwing Eddie a bachelor party, despite the protests of Eddie himself and most everyone else. It goes poorly with everyone not drinking or enjoying themselves, until the stripper arrives. Then it gets even worse.

Martin is missing condoms and learns Jeremy is starting to grow up. Judith seems calm until it finally strikes home he might actually have sex.

Martin falls for Judith's beautiful Mexican maid and then feels uncomfortable that she is "just" a maid.

Martin battles a giant rat that has invaded his apartment, which interferes in a very promising relationship with a co-worker he dreams about.

The business goes terribly, until a wrong number mistakes it for an S&M phone sex chat line and stays on for hours. Seeing where the real money is, Toby employs the services of her family to cover the phones.

Eddie tries to get in touch with his black roots after an incident on his talk show. Martin tries to support him but finds it a little annoying.

Martin, Eddie and Judith spend a weekend at a cabin with their old college friends. Passions spark and secrets are revealed. Martin fusses over a 20 year old misdeed.

The beautiful widow of a famous author brings a new unpublished novel by her late husband to Martin with the one caveat: that he cannot reveal the true origin of the book, thus giving Toby the opportunity to accept the kudos for the bestseller.

Martin falls for his sexy superintendent during a New York heat wave. When the passion fizzles he tries to dump her, with disastrous results to his utilities.

It's Christmas and a very pregnant Judith goes on a trip with Martin to receive a present for Richard, who's visiting the Pope. Jeremy has his first sexual experience and Eddie has two dates on the same evening. Toby has a vision of the Virgin Mary in the broken glass of Martin's door.

Eddie has a fight with Santa Claus while Toby considers joining a convent. Judith goes into labor with only Martin there to help deliver the baby, in a barn near the town of Bethlehem. Jeremy gains more sexual experiences with Marybeth, an 'older' woman.

Martin's sister invites him to her very private wedding asking him not to tell their parents. Martin can't seem to keep his mouth shut and the parents not only invite themselves but they mean to have the wedding their way.

A cheese fondue accident leaves Martin temporarily blinded and in hospital. Unable to see, he still manages to meet a cute nurse, who, he discovers later on, is slightly older than his usual conquests.

Martin's girlfriend loses her job and thinks of moving to another city. In order to keep her close, Martin persuades Judith to hire her as a nanny. Pamela does well in her new job only she gets too attached to the baby.

Toby finds out that her boyfriend is a priest. In the meanwhile, Martin prepares a surprise party for Judith's birthday.

While Martin is dating a co-worker, a husband and wife author team have marital problems affecting their writing despite an imminent deadline. He refers them to Judith, who advises them to focus on the relationship instead of on the book. Martin becomes the center of drama and revenge sex.

During Gibby's holiday, Martin's in charge of the company but he receives instructions to fire one of the editors. Judith is experiencing a professional crisis.

Jeremy meets a girl and asks Eddie if he could take her to his place. Eddie agrees but they keep it secret from Martin who still thinks Jeremy is "a kid".

Martin thinks he might have a grown up daughter with an old girlfriend, from the time they were in college.

Martin's mom decides to have a face lift, but doesn't want to tell her current boyfriend.

Martin tries to cheer Toby up when her cat dies by buying her a replacement. When she refuses the gift, he has to keep the pet himself.

Martin asks his girlfriend to marry him when he learns Richard wants to move to Washington and plans to take Judith and Jeremy with him.

Two screenwriters kidnap Judith's baby and make it appear like Martin did it.

Martin makes a deal with the kidnappers in order to set him and the baby free.

When the neighbors keep Martin up all night with their sounds of love making, he discovers they are prostitutes.

Martin's mom Doris dies during a visit to New York. In the process of distributing her belongings, Martin comes across a piano which leads him to find out a secret about his mother's past.

Martin is revolted when a fragile Judith falls into the arms of his hated boss Gibby Fiske.

Martin and Eddie attend their school reunion, where Martin is eager to make up for lost opportunities with a recently separated old flame.

Martin is tired of dating women who are not smart, but when Judith sets him up with a member of her late husband's think tank, he gets more than he bargained for.

When Martin injures himself having sex, he has to work from home. Toby over interprets her role as his secretary.

Martin feels sidelined when his Assistant Editor and girlfriend Kay edits Jeremy's sci-fi novel.

Eddie agrees to put money into Martin's play on condition that he gets to be the leading actor.

Martin gets angry enough to fire Toby. Gibby makes her an associate editor and she outsells him immediately.

Jeremy decides to embrace Christianity much to Martins distress. He tries to introduce him to Judaism at Judith's dinner party but it ends up causing a family feud.

Martin's dad breaks up with his old boyfriend and decides to move in with Martin. The stress of living with his father prompts Martin to take him to a gay bar and find some companionship. Martin's father meets Martin's current book author and the two hit it off, forcing Martin to intervene when gay overtones threaten to take over the book.

Martin has difficulty in bed and goes to a psychiatrist to learn he was molested as a child.

Recently divorced, Judith's old friend Bess comes to New York. Martin always believed there was a sexual tension between him and Bess and wants to release it… but Bess's unreleased tension has a different target.

Martin looks for a new best friend after Eddie decides to move to LA to join a sitcom.

Gibby offers his editors an increased annual bonus which would be given just to one of the editors and will be deducted from the salaries of others. Toby puts up a personal ad to which a famous writer responds.

One of Martins seemingly uptight writers turns out to be a closet sex addict. Things get strange for him when she asks to have another woman join them.

Jeremy gets a bad grade in math, gets a tutor 8 years his senior and quickly starts dating her, which puts Martin's and Judith's diverging parenting approaches to a challenge.

Martin has the last word when he learns Gibby wants him to fail as the head of a new division at the firm.

Since moving in with Judith, Martin's old apartment has gone vacant. He needs to find a new tenant quickly but has no good options. He agrees to rent his apartment to Toby but soon regrets it.

As Eddie's best man, Martin starts asking himself whether he should re-marry Judith.

On the verge of Judith and Martin's wedding, plans to revive her late husband Richard Stone surface.
