Eddie Walker and Thomas Finch were World War II veterans and old friends who arranged for their teenage daughters to live with each other's families for a year so that Eddie's daughter, Patty, could study at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London. While Patty stayed in London with Thomas, known as Tommy, his wife, Sybil, and their son, Neville, Tommy's daughter, Heather, lived in New York City with Eddie, his wife, Dorothy, and their son, also named Tommy. The show explored the joys and challenges Heather and Patty experienced as they adjusted to life with each other's families. Heather struggled with the less formal lifestyle in New York City and the United States, while Patty had difficulty adapting to London's more formal, tradition-oriented way of life. The fathers faced their own challenges as they tried to help the girls settle in. Dorothy and Sybil also had to adjust to having different daughters in their households, but they took the changes more in stride.
