Ten years ago, the life of operative Sergei Granin changed dramatically when he was seriously injured while rescuing his friend and partner Yuri Dymov. During the time the law enforcement officer was in the hospital, his wife Maria went to Dymov and took their eight-year-old daughter with her. Disappointed in his family and people in general, Granin leaves for a remote village, where he becomes an inspector of forest protection and receives the nickname Leshiy for his unsociability.
In his new position, Granin does not sit idle and helps the local district police officer Karpen in solving cases. This attracts the attention of the new chief of police, who turns out to be Dymov, who was transferred here from St. Petersburg. Now the former partners have to cross paths with each other while investigating crimes, the traces of which often lead to the forest surrounding the village of Ostrov from all sides. Granin's ex-wife and daughter, who arrived with Dymov, prevent him from focusing on finding criminals.
