Pixie and Molly are arch enemies, as different as sugar and spice. During the 1920s, they are forced to leave home to attend high school and their parents have decided they will board together. They travel hundreds of miles from the tiny settlement of Coolawong, deep in the Australian Outback, to a big country town where the girls will begin a new life with a new family.

The problem of being forced to live together compels Pixie and Molly to become unwilling allies. After arriving in Willsford, the girls first task is to arrange to get the room they want at Pixie's grandmother's house which means finding a way to get young Jimmy out of the spacious veranda room.

It Pixie and Molly's first day at Willsford Ladies College but their new school is seemingly filled with nothing but mean teachers and insufferable classmates who want nothing to do with the new arrivals. When Marguerite, the daughter of the handsome French teacher arrives, Pixie is quick to befriend her and together with Molly, turns the tables on the school bully.

Poor Molly. Homesickness, eternal quarrels with Pixie, and the meanness of the sneaky little Jimmy have gradually driven Molly to despair. She borrows Captain Jack's horse and heads back home but on the way she encounters her classmate Louise whose unwitting advice turns her around. Pixie's friendship with Marguerite leaves Molly out in the cold and in cahoots with Louise on a missfiring practical joke.

Treated as social outcasts by the school clique, Molly, Pixie and Marguerite decide to join the Girl Guides in an effort to meet new friends. But there is one problem: Pixies grandmother can not stand the Girl Guides! To change her mind, Marguerite and the girls try to impress her by setting up camp in the backyard. Their plan goes terribly wrong but an encouraging word from M. Chevrier helps turn the tide.

In the house of old Mrs Watson, mysterious things are happening: doors open and close for no reason, curtains whisper, furniture moves by itself, and pictures fall off the wall. Poor Mrs. Watson dares not more home alone. For Molly and Pixie the matter is clear: a spirit has taken root in Mrs. Watson's house! The girls decide to spend the night and get to the bottom of the mystery. After spending a sleepless night alone in the house, Pixie and Molly call on their Girl Guide friends for help unmasking the house's spirits.

Pixie is out of tune. Previously she was cantor in the school choir but before the big district gala singing competition, Miss Orrick gives the position to Molly. After ruining her good dress, Molly borrows (without permission) one of Aunt Vera's blouses and a pearl necklace so she will have something to wear to the competition. Molly loses the necklace when the bus driving the choir to the competition is forced to stop for repairs. Pixie quickly scoops up the pearls but doesn't say anything until after a tearful Molly returns home after scouring the dusty country road.

Aunt Vera has a great idea: she invites the whole family to a picnic in the countryside. Captain Jack chauffeurs grandma and Molly in the horse-drawn buggy while Pixie, Anne and Jimmy travel by automobile with Aunt Vera, a proven bad driver. Captain Jack's group arrives, but where are the others? Aunt Vera has gotten lost and the car breaks down. When Aunt Vera attempts to start it again, she hits her head and knocks herself out forcing Jimmy and Anne to drive for help.

After listening to Marguerite and Esmerelda rave on about the famous heartthrob, Molly and Pixie decide to skip school with their freinds to attend a matinee of the latest Rudolph Valentino film but they are spotted by Aunt Vera and Jacques, along with Jimmy and some of their classmates. Fortunately, everyone has reasons for wanting their presence at the theatre kept secret. Meanwhile, Pixie attempts to hide an injured possum in her bedroom.

The arrival of a barnstorming pilot and his mechanic brings excitement and near disaster to Willsford. The pair want to organise rides for the locals and for that they need two capable assistants. Molly and Pixie are excited because it beckons not only a free flight as a reward, but also the coveted Girl Guide aviator badge. But others also want this badge. Then there's Jimmy, who also gets hired only to find himself having to compete against the girls for the promised free ride.

Pixie and Molly have qualified for their Girl Guides' Airwoman's Badge, and are envied by the others in the class. The girls all decide to get their cooking badge next which will require them to go into the bush to catch a rabbit, kill it, skin it and finally prepare it for Miss Pittman. They think it will be an easy task, until they see how cute the bunnies are.

A remark about rabbits and 'multiplication' exposes Pixie's lack of knowledge about sexual reproduction. Unfortunately, Aunt Vera does not want to explain to her the facts of life and suggests she talk to grandma but she will only speak in riddles. But then Pixie discovers a book with the promising title "All About Nature" and hopes it will shed some light on the matter.

Hoping to join their friends on a Girl Guides camp out, Molly and Pixie take on odd jobs to earn the necessary money. But with only one week to accomplish their goal, their friends take an interest in their task. Louise even bets her new bangles, a rare gift from her father, against Myrtle's imported coloured pencils that they will succeed. While taking on any manner of task, the girls must also contend with the antics of Jimmy and Freddo, and Mrytle's scheming.

The Girl Guides' camp out starts off on the wrong foot when Miss Orrick appears as a last minute replacement for Guide leader Miss Pittman. Forthermore, the surprise guest Patrol Leader turns out to be Anne who is a strict taskmaster. Pixie and Molly take advantage of Anne's tendancy to faint at the sight of blood to get back at her for singling them out for all the hard jobs. The weeked takes a serious turn when Miss Orrick is bitten by a snake leaving Anne to take charge of the group. Her heroics make the newspaper outing her as a Girl Guide to Grandma.

Molly's attempt to organise a game of cricket among the girls from school ends in disaster. Jimmy's basketball team is on the wane so when Molly accidentally drops by during practice and teaches them to play properly, Jimmy has the great idea to add her to the team. He even dresses her up like a boy — with matching haircut — to get her on the court for their next game.

Dispite her tough exterior, the teasing about Molly's boyish haircut upsets her and she takes to wearing a hat all the time. A big celebration is coming up — Molly and Pixie are to be confirmed. Of course they need the perfect outfits for the occasion, so Aunt Vera takes them on a shopping trip to Melbourne. They are accompanied by Marguerite's charming father Jacques who has invited them to join him and Marguerite at the theatre to see the famous ballerina Anna Pavlova. Pixie and Marguerite go for a walk in Melbourne's Chinatown causing everyone to miss the ballet.

Miss Orrick informs the class that the end-of-term exams are close. Pixie is determined to top the class while Molly is aware that if she fails she'll have to repeat the year — at great expense to her parents. However, neither Pixie nor school swat Lucy have the time or desire to give Molly additional tutoring. Instead, she is advised to contact Cyril, the mastermind of the boys highschool. When Cyril begins to pay too much attention to Molly, she and Pixie decide to play matchmaker with a more suitable girl.

The girls in Pixie's and Molly's class are excited when Miss Orrick informs them the end-of-year school entertainment is to be a tableau-vivant. Most excited is Molly, who has been given the lead role, eliciting much jealousy from her friends. With enemies at both school and at home, there is no end of people lining up to sabotage her performance.

While the rest of the family is delighted with the end-of-term festivities at the tableau-vivant and the start of the holidays, grandma is annoyed by her constant struggles with the children and Aunt Vera's lack of independence. To show their appreciation, the girls decide to clean up the house. Aunt Vera announces she has decided to remarry. Pixie and Molly are concerned that she is marrying for all the wrong reasons and set out to stop M. Chevrier's proposal lest Anne and Jimmy be forced to move to France.

The arrival of Pixie and Molly's parents sets the tone for holidays. When Jimmy goes in search of mistletoe for the Christmas party, he and Freddo are gone far too long. Has something happened to them? The girls go in search of them and find them at an abandoned mine where Jimmy has fallen down the shaft. While Freddo goes for help, Pixie lowers Molly down to rescue Jimmy. Safely back at the house, Captain Jack and Grandma have an announcement to make...
