QI and QI XL - season numbers dont match up.

augur wrote 9 years ago: 1

I have just noticed that the extended QI XL has a different season number than its corresponding QI.

As a reminder QI is a BBC1 quiz show which runs for 30 mins, QI XL is a longer edit of the show which runs for 45 mins. An extended version if you will.

At the moment season M is airing and is listed under QI as season 13 (M is the 13th letter of the alphabet) but under QI XL as season 8. This is probably because the BBC didn't start airing the extended versions until season 6. However, it is quite confusing for anyone looking at them as it appears that the QI XL broadcasts are several years older than the QI broadcasts.

I believe that whilst they should remain as two shows the seasons/episodes should match up i.e. QI XL s13e14 (Messy) is the extended version of QI s13e14 (Messy).

yeah but he has another point, the XL show is missing episode 3 'M-Places' from series 8. that's why the episode numbering is off to I think.

Yeah some episodes in the past series haven't aired XL episodes either :)

If you take a look at the official BBC website. QI XL didn't in fact start airing until 2009, whilst QI began airing in 2003. That's why there's a difference in season numbers.

Technically they are both currently airing series M, they stopped labelling them numerically on their site after series 8 (H) so series 9 was labelled as series I for both QI and QI XL.

Usually it is the VG compilation episodes (VG stands for Very Good) that do not have corresponding XL versions. And also the time between the airing of the QI and QI XL epsiodes is usually only a few days but can sometimes be several weeks if they decide to preempt the XL for some reason.
