Sports airing in more than 1 Country?

JAGUARDOG wrote 9 years ago: 1

This site will never be considered a TV site when you don't list 1 off TV Specials, Made for TV Movies that only have 1 of, Sports that "supposedly" air in 2 or more countries just to name a few?

If you refuse to allow shows that you claim air in 2 or more countries shouldn't you at least have them here showing in at least 1 of those Countries rather than not allowing them to be here at all? Such as the "World Surf League" for instance is my example for today. If you won't allow it to be added as showing in the U.S. and you claim it airs in other countries as well maybe you should at least provide a Network and Country that it also airs in besides the U.S. to prove your point and not just say "per our sports rules this is not allowed here"?

The Olympics which is the biggest of all the sports, now I know that one airs in Multiple countries but shouldn't it be allowed to be here in at least one of those countries so those who like to watch can at least see which of the multiple competitions is airing that day? Besides the Olympics are listed on every TV site I know of but not this one because you do not want this to be considered a viable TV site?

The World Cup is another and by some considered the 2nd biggest sport and by some considered bigger than the Olympics?

You just end up making anyone interested in those sports you do not allow to go elsewhere to find the information they are seeking. That also means less traffic here for the site which in turn means less revenue from clicks.

I suggest you re-consider your stance on Sports if you ever want to be considered a TV site to go to for information?

I'm really not trying to be hard to get along with honestly. I'm just trying to make a point and help the site improve itself is all!

This is not an argument it is only a Suggestion to reconsider your current rules at least on Sports shows that air in more than 1 Country to at least allow them to be here in 1 of those multiple Countries please?

The reason for it as David states:

First of all, it has never been my intention to allow these - let's call them - "Sports Events". None of these fit my definition of "airing regularly", but that obviously wasn't clear enough, hence this thread.

I also think it isn't and shouldn't be our goal to list everything that airs on TV, I'd rather stick with listing everything that we're good at. But of course that's something that can be expanded over time! We already explicitly disallow one-time specials, made for TV movies, reruns. Is it really too far fetched to explicitly disallow irregular worldwide sports events as well?

Is the current quality of these entries really so good that dropping them would drive any users away? For example, the http://www.tvmaze.com/shows/16349/uefa-champions-league entry is a complete chaos in my opinion. It's something that airs - almost - worldwide, but we have it added as Dutch show. Why Dutch, instead of any other country? This means Dutch people will see it on their schedule, but users from any other country won't. We could move it to a different country, but that'd just move the problem around instead of fixing it. The episode titles are also Dutch, but how the hell is an English speaker going to understand what "kwartfinale" or "nabeschouwing" means?

And that's beside a lot of other complicated questions. If two countries air the same event with different commentary - should we add it twice? What if they air it in a different sequence, cut, or with different behind-the-scenes footage? Of course we could just create separate entries for all the other countries this thing airs in, but then we'd end up with 50 different listings with exactly the same kind of information. That won't be fun to maintain.

Basically, it's currently just not possible to add these events to TVmaze in a way that's consistent and actually useful for the majority of the users. So I think it's better to hold off on them entirely until we can.

However, all the other TV sites on the Internet list them but not this one? If other TV sites can do it there is no reason this site can't do it either at least for the U.S. for now until other Countries can be figured out. Zap2it.com does it, futoncritic.com does it, imdb.com does it, tvrage.com does it, tvguide does it, tv.com does it just to name a few!

I'm guessing that if the pending feature "Support for premiere airdates in different countries" ever gets added, the sports rule will be obsolete as both airdates could be added.

Thanks Gazza but this statement has nothing to do with my main point - "For example, track the first time an episode airs in the US, when that episode has already aired in the UK earlier."

Because, I am talking mostly about live events the day they air for the very first time so it's no where near the same.

Besides in the statement it states it previously aired in the UK 1st so my answer to that is no after it has already aired once somewhere in the world any other airings would then be repeats that is strictly verboten!

To be honest I didn't read your full post; I thought you meant syndicated events where they air simultaneously in multiple countries (i.e a match with two countries, each country airing the live game).

If the multiple premiere date for country feature was added, we could just set it as the same date for both countries.

I'm not sure what you mean by syndicated events unless you mean those that air on Syndicated Networks?

However I am talking about "events where they air simultaneously in multiple countries"? For example Swimming at the Olympics with Michael Phelps airing live in the U.S. and also in 1 or more countries, not replays and not tape delays of an event that already aired somewhere.

yes and so far david and jan do not want to have those as there is no "real" premiere date for those,a s they air at the same time in maybe 15 countries.

What's your point Juan? So they air at the same time in 1 Country, 2 Countries or 100 Countries that should not matter just to have them added in only 1 like all those other TV sites I mentioned above do?

But how do you decide which country has to be put as the premiere country ?

Now that is an Excellent point so let me see the choices I can come up with?

1. Flip a coin several times

2. Rock, Paper, Scissors

3. First person who adds the sport chooses (1st come, 1st serve)

4. Vote (Majority of members votes wins)

5. Just pick the U.S. for now (as all of the other TV sites listed above have done) and when it is figured out how to add more countries at a later date do so then?

6. Add a new category that allows multiple Country Networks to be added to any show when proof is provided?

I think point 6.is the correct way to go, but this needs to be implemented, david and jan are right now working heavily on developing stuff for the site.
