Australia Timezone incorrect

BazzaG wrote 7 years ago: 1

Just noticed several shows have appeared in my watchlist an hour before they were due to be broadcast.

Noticed that Under Site Preferences/Locale Preferences:

+11:00 Australia/Currie

+11:00 Australia/Hobart

+11:00 Australia/Melbourne

+11:00 Australia/Sydney

These are all incorrect and should be +10:00.

There's also a bunch of other Australian cities/regions that are also incorrect. Those cities/regions that are incorrect (by +1 hour) all appear to support daylight savings. Those cities/regions that don't support DST appear to be correct, for example:

+10:00 Australia/Brisbane

is correct.

Also, Lord_Howe Island is wrong by 0.5 hours:

+11:00 Australia/Lord_Howe

It's currently +10:30 hours ahead of UTC/GMT.

Australia is NOT on DST yet and the east coast of Australia is 10 hours ahead of UTC/GMT, not 11 hours as specified on this site.

Those states that do move their clocks forward don't do so until 7th October, 2018.

Oh, and changing/saving my timezone to Brisbane does NOT prevent the shows from appearing in my watchlist before they have been broadcast.

The display string for offset ("like +11:00") in the dashboard is currently a static value, it doesn't update throughout the year based on DST observation. However, for the actual airtime calculation we don't use this offset property but the proper timezone identifier with all its DST rules.

But I do think the timezone currently assigned to Australia might be incorrect. See for example https://www.tvmaze.com/networks/120/nine-network, it's currently set to Antarctica/Macquarie which looks like it's some kind of outlier that doesn't get a their own TV feed.

Looks like it should be set to an instance of "Australia Eastern Standard Time" instead, but you'll have to help me out choosing which one. I presume that the primary Australian eastern TV feed follow the south-eastern states that observe DST, or is it based from Queensland?

I'm not sure I understand your question, but here goes:

The Aussie states/territories that OBSERVE DST are: NSW, ACT, Victoria, Tasmania and South Australia.

The following states/territories do NOT: Queensland, Northern Territory and Western Australia

Lord Howe Island (considered part of NSW) does use DST but only adjusts their clocks by 30 mins.

Norfolk Island ... No DST

ditto for the other external Australian territories.

See: https://www.timeanddate.com/time/change/australia

I have no idea why Nine would have Antarctica/Macquarie timezone defined. The network is mostly based in Melbourne and Sydney but they do broadcast some shows unique to each state, for example, news.

As for the 3 Australian Antarctic Territories all have different timezones (none support DST):

Mawson - UTC+5

Davis - UTC+7

Casey - UTC+8

Meanwhile Macquarie Island is considered part of Tasmania and does support DST.

All of the main Australian TV networks are based in Eastern Australia ... ABC, SBS, Nine, Seven and Ten.

I went here: https://www.tvmaze.com/networks?Network%5Bcountry_enum%5D=14&Network%5Bsort%5D=1&page=1

and clicked on a number of "networks" and all of those that I looked at had time: Antarctica/Macquarie

None of the "networks" listed for Australia should have this timezone defined. Most, if not all, should have AEST.

Cheers

Let me try to rephrase. In the summer, when DST is observed, and a network announces "episode X premieres at 20:00", what do they mean?

Does the episode premiere at 20:00 for TV feeds in NSW? Or at 20:00 for TV feeds in Queensland? Or both?

BazzaG wrote 7 years ago: 1

In almost all cases, it would mean the show would broadcast at the LOCAL time.

So during DST periods, the 6pm News on, say, Nine, would broadcast at 6pm in NSW and 6pm in Queensland (7pm in NSW).

The same is true for the various timezones across Australia (AEST, ACST and AWST).

The exception would be live sports and similar shows.

david wrote 7 years ago: 1

OK, so that makes NSW/ACT etcetera the primary airzone year-round.

Looks like "Australia/Sydney" is the accompanying timezone identifier, I'll make that switch soon if there are no further comments.

I'm still getting some shows that appear in my watchlist before they have or about to be broadcast. Even this oddity which is in my watchlist:

You Can't Ask That

https://www.tvmaze.com/shows/19469/you-cant-ask-that

which goes to air at 21:00 ... episode 7

Yet the shows that airs BEFORE does NOT show in watchlist (correctly at the time I started writing this reply):

The Weekly with Charlie Pickering

https://www.tvmaze.com/shows/6667/the-weekly-with-charlie-pickering

which airs at 20:30 ... episode 17

The broadcast times for both shows are correct for both episodes.

I didn't make a change yet.

BazzaG wrote 7 years ago: 1

I didn't think so, since this thread hadn't been updated. Something strange going on though.

david wrote 7 years ago: 1

The timezone for Australia has been updated. How does it look now?

BazzaG wrote 7 years ago: 1

I don't have any Aussie shows that will appear in my watchlist until tomorrow afternoon and then some more tomorrow night. I'll let you now.

I also changed my Locale Preferences back to Melbourne.

TBH, if the +11:00 (or whatever) is static, I and I'm sure a lot of others would find that very confusing.
