Policy on foreign languages

david wrote 8 years ago: 1

With the recent requests for foreign shows, we've had some questions regarding the language of show & episode titles and summaries.

After deliberation, we have set the following policy.

Show- and Episode names:

- Should have their original language. If they are foreign, that means the names will be foreign.

- Though, if the language has a non-Latin character set and an official Latin transliteration is available, the names should be transliterated to Latin ("Shingeki no Kyojin" rather than "進撃の巨人").

- If a Show is added with a transliterated name, please add an AKA for the name in the original character set.

- If a Show is added with a non-English name, please add an English AKA to the Show where applicable.

Show- and Episode summaries:

- Should always be in English.

A system to properly manage non-English summaries will be added at a later stage.

So that sounds like a step in the right direction and a great start. Hopefully some year you will re-visit this policy and discuss the possibility or being able to add Both the English and the Foreign summaries on the show page with a paragraph spacing between the two?

please add an English AKA to the Show where applicable - Do you mean on the back screen under AKA's I assume or next to the foreign title itself right up/out front like this Señora Acero (Lady Steel)

What about non-latin foreign languages (e.g. Japanese)? Should we use english transliteration (like "Shingeki no Kyojin") or original language (like "進撃の巨人")?

And I think AKA title for episodes titles, not only for show title, would be pretty useful.

I am all for "use english transliteration"

, aka for episodes is definitely useful but I think right now with the high workload that we are facing not a high priority thing :)

Thanks for asking! We've discussed this and determined that if the source language is in a non-latin character set and an official transliteration is available, the show name and episode titles should be transliterated to latin. I've updated the opening post to add this.

Hi. Thank you for hospitality after tvrage falling.
I'm asking permission of the esteemed admins to write names of actors in original language.
At first day here on tvmaze I've got (PM) rigid regulation to add all cast names in transliteration.
I suppose, it would be prefered to have names conversely: original russians and transliterated added to aka section (if you'll obligate so).
Anyway many new on tvmaze russian contributors (which might be not aware of this demand) are (and will be) adding names of russian actors with original spelling (as well, seeking, too). Also, the transliteration can be confusing variously. All this already caused some dublicates (and I'm not sure how to merge them, because half of names added in russian and the other in transliteration).
Thank you

We made a decision that it is ok for actors and episode titles to be in the original language (letters), you can add the translation as aka if you want to.

Only sumamries need to be in english only.

if you tell me which actors need to be merged, please let us know in the "Edit Request" thread, we will take care of it then :)

cheers
Juan

What do you mean by an official transliteration, one provided by the TV Network or according to official transliteration rules?

Also it would be helpful to display AKA somewhere on the shows page.

Yes sure you can. You can select Russia as country and write it in Russian, that's the purpose of AKA's

Thank you.

But the "country" option disappeared a couple days ago.

I can still select the country when adding an aka with a series. It's just not there with persons :), but feel free to add it, no worries.

OK, found. Thank you.

I did a lot of work on the Russian "Law & Order" "Закон и Порядок" shows, and all the episodes I used the Russian names with the English translation in brackets.

example: Закон генетики (The Law of Genetics)

Sadly, I just discovered I've lost all access to TVRage pages through the Way Back Machine due to a robots text. Somebody is indeed messing with TVRage, last weekend I took over a lot of info.
