If I hover over the mail button then try to open a notification link in a new tab then the new tab just shows an error page. Same applies on the Notifications page when trying to open a link in a new tab. Please don't interfere with the browser new tab functionality!

I think it is on your side to be honest. Using the newest firefox, I have no issues with it.
I'm using Firefox 20.01. I should not have to upgrade my browser to get the basic functionality of being able to open a link in a new tab. If you're creating compliant web pages this should not be a problem.
You're right, the behavior is as you describe for me on the latest available Firefox version. It's there because of limitations in HTML, so it's not trivial to fix. I don't like it either though when opening a link in a new tab isn't possible, so we'll definitely look at this eventually.
