There has been ongoing arguments among thousands of people over a decade, because the official site is wrong.
Some sites still stick to the official site, we decided to stick with what most other sites do. But there seems to be no right or wrong :)

Indeed. Both FOX and TBS have been very inconsistent throughout the years when talking about the official season numbering. It even has a wikipedia section: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/American_Dad!#Season...
There simply isn't one correct way to number these episodes. At least for the forseeable future the current scheme is fine and should stay as-is.
