I've set the preferences to show UK tv but I do follow some series from other countries, when I do calendar or schedule these show up even though they are on channels only available in their home country? Shouldn't setting the preferences to show UK tv filter these out until they are shown on UK tv?

Which setting are you talking about exactly ?
I see a setting to filter shows by country on the front page or one to selected a list in calendar. But none to filter by country on calendar page
If you're referring to the timezone locale preference, then it's simply for when "Display airdates on the calendar and schedule in your local timezone" is enabled.
It isn't intended to only show airings in that timezone.
While we do have alternate lists for other country premieres, it's not common enough on the site, so even if it worked the way you wanted, you'd rarely see any examples of it.
