How Do You Cancel Your Account Here?!

chazTV wrote 9 years ago: 1

Can't find anything in the user-menu that has a cancel account option. Even though I click 'unsubscribe' in the constant flood of marketing messages from this site, they continue to roll in. I've concluded cancelling the user account may be the only way to turn off the messages.

You might have mixed us up with a different site.

We send one email a week at most, and only if you have unread notifications. You can turn that behavior off here: http://www.tvmaze.com/dashboard/preferences

What kind of emails are you talking about?

Marketing messages? Look again. You're not getting those from us...

david wrote 9 years ago: 1

The next time if someone wants to accuse us of sending spam, please have the courtesy of following-up to our replies afterwards.

amcnpinho wrote 9 years ago: 2

Ok, but how do we cancel the account?

david wrote 9 years ago: 1

There's no option to cancel your account. If a lot of people ask for it, we could build that. Though if you simply log out and don't visit us anymore, you'll never hear from us again.

If you could tell us what exactly you want to accomplish by "cancelling" your account, that would help!

SongsAboutMusic wrote 9 years ago: 4

I can see the logic behind it. For the user it's a way to minimize your digital footprint (especially if you're not using the site) and for the admin it's a more accurate count of user activity. Giving people the option to cancel speaks to your effort of minimizing your inactive user base.

Also, in a case like this cancellation & opening up a new account could conceivably be the only way to get it accomplished.

Sandrosaurus wrote 9 years ago: 1

It's strange why you guys don't make it possible...is there something behind it? TVMaze working for the government...why the secrecy? Everyone deserves freedom!

Cool site tho ;)

Let me elaborate.

If your account has significant activity on the site, like posting on the forums or making edits, it's technically impossible to remove all traces of the account in our database completely. (Technical folks will understand what I'm referring to; referential integrity)

We keep very little information about our users though, and all of it can simply be changed (or blanked out) by yourself in the profile settings. The only case when we send out emails is when you have unread notifications (which can only occur by interacting with the site) and the "receive emails about weekly notifications" setting is enabled. So if you disable that setting or simply stop visiting the site, you would never hear from us again.

So if you're simply not interested in using TVmaze anymore, you could just log out and never return.

Of course if you really want your account to be disabled, we're happy to do that. And if you're concerned about your digital footprint and want to disable/anonymize your account, we're happy to help as well. That's why I asked what exactly people would expect to happen after "cancelling" your account. :)

So, who do I speak to about deleting my account, for the reasons aforementioned? It's useful and a great looking site, I just realised I didn't need it

I would need a couple of answers to the question I posed earlier: "That's why I asked what exactly people would expect to happen after "cancelling" your account. :)"

I also want my email removed from your database. The site does not provide me with what I thought and therefore do not want my name or email remaining in your database.

You can of course change your email address when you're logged in, but fair enough.

So a feature that removes the email adress from your account, then disables your account to make it impossible to log in. Would that be enough for everyone?

Same here ?

bungle wrote 9 years ago: 1

that's odd. just curious, what did the marketing messages say and are you sure they came from here?

Jan wrote 9 years ago: 1

@bungle: I doubt we'll get an answer since one month has passed and the user only has 1 comment.

I'll be locking this thread.

As David stated:
