Using Posters and Data from TVmaze API on a Commercial Website

musicinmusic wrote 5 months ago: 1

Hi everyone,

I’m working on a website that shows TV show info, posters, and actor details. The site will also have ads and affiliate links.

I saw the API is under CC BY-SA, so I wanted to make sure — is it allowed to use the posters, show details, and cast info from the API on a commercial site, as long as I credit TVmaze?

Also, do I have to load the posters directly from your URLs, or is it okay to store them on my server and display them from there?

Thanks in advance for the clarification!

Hi @musicinmusic

Yes, you can use the data commercially as long as you credit TVmaze, in line with the CC BY-SA license.

For images, we work with networks and studios, so it's best to link directly to our URLs. If there's ever a takedown request, we handle it on our side. Hosting the images yourself means you'd take on that responsibility.

That's awesome, thanks a lot! I'll link to your URLs and I'll credit TVmaze of course. It would be great if there was something similar for movie posters, there's TMDB but their commercial license is $149 per month which is far too much for me.

I'd like to second that it's great we can use it. How to credit TVmaze is a bit unclear to me though. Should I provide credit wherever I use information taken from TVmaze? Or is once in an 'about' part of my application enough? Thanks so much.

@musicinmusic  TVmaze is all about making information accessible, so you're good to go :) If you end up building a million-dollar business, feel free to reach out about our commercial API 😉

@hkant  Ideally, you’d link from your show/person pages to the corresponding pages on TVmaze. That way, users can trace the source and request corrections if needed. When updates happen on TVmaze, everyone using the API benefits automatically.
