Chat & profiles pages

mmfgtv wrote 10 years ago: 1

I was referred here by the Tvmaze twitter account when I mentioned how bad I think Getglue messed up such a good thing. I decided to try the site out and was fairly impressed by what I found here but one of the main things missing here seems to be interaction. Do you think a specific chat feature would remedy this or is it just that the site is relatively new and there isn't much activity on the site yet? Because I think a chat section on each shows page would be conducive to growth in interaction amongst users. Example:

[ Main | Episodes | Cast | Crew | Characters | Reviews | Chat | Gallery | AKA's ]

Also I'm very new here & don't know all the in's & out's so I'm sure profile development is in the works but imho, a chat/comment section on personal profiles would also make for a more social/community site...or maybe it'll be the beginning of the end of the world & we'll all go crazy! JK :)

Hey mmfgtv,

Speaking for myself.

You're right about the point you're making.

The site is fairly new and that's one of the reasons for the lack of social interaction, We can see that users are very engaged with the tools provided. but there are obviously a lot of things that still need to get done to improve social interaction between users on the site.

We just haven't spent enough time developing that aspect of the site yet. It's not that we don't think that human interaction isn't an important aspect for a site like tvmaze to grow and enhance the user experience. But we have limited resources and time right now and we need to give priority to certain things first. If we have to choose between developing tools to manage the content on the site or social tools. We'd much rather provide managing tools than develop ways of interaction because it's a bit of a gamble in such an early stage.

Keep the suggestions coming, we're listening. :)

Of course our resources are a factor, but perhaps an even bigger part is that we're not very sure yet what our userbase wants in this area: if we know for sure that a lot of our users want a specific feature we'll build it!

What does the average user want nowadays for a site like TVmaze? Do they want to leverage an existing network's graph (like facebook's friends or twitter's followers), or do they want to build a separate list of friends on TVmaze because their facebook family&friends' TV interests are nothing like theirs?

Do they want to use TVmaze to talk about shows and episodes, and have us push that data to their social networks; or do they want to talk on the social networks they already use and have us pull that information into TVmaze?

So if you have an opinion in this area, definitely let us know and we'll listen! Otherwise we'll just keep on experimenting and see what succeeds. Adding a low-barrier comment/chat section to shows and/or users doesn't sound like a bad idea :)

You guys raise some really interesting points, some I definitely considered as factors & some I hadn't. A lot to consider! Thank you!

from a tv tracker i want 1st of all , a easy and fast way to keep track of shows. most of the similar sites are to confusing these days, with to much stuff that i think its useless. the second part is to find new shows and people with similar tastes. making a "facebook for shows" it´s not the right way, but the ability to check out other´s profiles on a global feed; check out what they are watching; maybe even add as friend but that´s it. This my opinion, and for an example on how the "social network" can be TO MUCH is tvshowtime.

Chats might be useful indeed, but I would love to see an internal mailbox system, so you could contact each other throughout here in private :)

That would indeed be very useful, in case you need to conatct another user quickly :)

Agreed! mailbox was something I forgot to include in my initial post but yes I'd also be very interested in having a private mailbox.

I think with the friends list, creating a new one would be optimal with the option to search other networks & invite friends from those sites to Tvmaze. I've been on plenty of sites where temporary permission was granted to A) find your friends who are already members of the site using your email & B) import your contacts to be invited and both worked well.

With the conversation I've seen the benefits of both models where what being said on a certain site could be shared to social networks and in the case of a site like Fflick which was acquired by Google, or even Bookvibe, what's being said on Twitter is pulled directly and fed into an aggregate under that specific show, movie or book.

Were you ever a member of tvshowtime? I've downloaded it and so far I like what I see. This looks like exactly what I was looking for! I haven't explored the social aspect of it yet. I'm curious, what exactly didn't you like about it?

That's interesting to hear :) What does it offer that we don't that appeals to you the most?

What it offers that you don't yet is first off, an app. The UI is simplified but still very functional and attractive, interactivity between members, the ability to easily add friends from other networks as well as your address book, and more. Again I'm new to, and see the value of both but Tvshowtime instantly struck me as exactly what I was seeking.
