TheTVDB?

I've honestly thought about starting this topic a few times in the past few months, but I'm finally creating it now.

I know TVmaze adds TheTVDB IDs onto shows, and I believe there is a way to pull data from there to bring over here as well? (I believe that's how @RoseRed was quickly able to create the hundreds of episodes over the last few years onto Kill Tony?...)

Anyways, my suggestion is to remove those two TheTVDB features on TVmaze, and any others I/others might not be aware of. To put a long story short: aside from any users still attempting to add data onto the website, TheTVDB is essentially dead/a free-for-all. The two features to get in contact with staff member(s) are of no use (Forums were shut down a few years ago; you can create support tickets, but no one answers any support tickets).

I've been chatting lately on the subreddit for TheTVDB, which if you look at the different posts over the past few months, is the only place left to discuss issues on the site, which all boil down to the same problems: that there is virtually no support on the website (from any staff) and is just a do-whatever-you-want now. I'm not sure about the one moderator on the subreddit (GillyBeavis), but other other, TheTVDB, is the original owner of the website who is no longer associated with said website, and yet still uses the same Reddit account named after the website (as stated here, hasn't been working at TheTVDB for around 18 months at the time of that comment)

While there may be some useful data to use as a secondary source, I'm not sure it is the best idea to be actively getting data from there for this site while that website is heavily unmoderated and does not utilize any kind of support/request system.

If you want to go looking through some Reddit threads and read some of the ongoing issues, feel free:

TL;DR- TheTVDB is heavily unmoderated, has no active way to contact support (and actually get any response back), is now essentially a free-for-all that is easily prone to vandalism, and has several other problems. Some of the ongoing issues have already been ongoing for several months/years now, with seemingly no end in sight; this doesn't seem like a website that should be getting used to bring data over to TVmaze anymore.

EDIT: Also feel like noting that their 'Policy Updates' page was last updated in July 2020. Seems like the last time any site updates were given was April 2022.

Hi, uhm I'm not really sure what to reply here other than saying that while we do have the ability to pull data from tvdb and futon we don't import any data automatically or without human oversight, so that's not something I'd be too worried about.

Keeping external IDs also have a lot more uses than you might think. Both as a safeguard against duplicates and for searching and various extra features through the API.

You can search for a show using external id's both through the API and in the regular search box on the webpage using

"tvdb <id>" or "imdb <id>".

With all that said we're very aware that data coming from other user-generated sites may vary in quality, be sorted in a way that don't fit our policies or be flat out wrong. Which is why access to these tools are limited to TCs and above and to be used sparingly for things like importing old shows we're missing and keeping shows with no editors up to date.

And as always our data policies regarding official sources applies, always verify data using those first if possible.

It should also be noted that for individual shows, the fetching of updates from thetvdb (the process Aidan mentioned) can be turned off.

We've turned it off when we've seen data be highly unreliable, or in a completely different format to how our policy dictates.

This still keeps the external ID.
