Some explanation with the Crew Types

MichaelDeBoey wrote 10 years ago: 1

Maybe it would be helpfull if there's a page with some explanation with the Crew Types?

Like what's the difference between Music and Composer or between Set Decorator and Art Director for instance?

For non-English shows (Dutch in my case) it can be hard to know which to choose, because the crew type is showed in the native language of the show.

I agree, I also do not know the difference sometimes :)

I think it would make it a lot more clear for most people.

And it can come in handy if we have a problem with some Crew Types, so we can just refer to the list :-)

Hey everyone! I just joined the site today! But I've been a contributor to most of the other TV archive sites for many years, including TvTome from just after John created it.

I also just retired after an almost 30 year career in Film and Television production. Crew credits can indeed be very confusing so if I can be of any assistance, please let me know. I'd be glad to help.

For example, I worked a lot of different positions over three decades in the biz but most of the work I did was in sound. I'd get credited as the following: Sound Mixer, Audio Mixer, Field Sound Mixer, Production Sound Mixer, Sound Recordist, Audio Engineer, and on and on. The problem was, it's all the same job...lol! I'd do exactly the same thing for all but it was up to the show or film what they called it. So my best piece of advice starting out is if at all possible, use whatever the credits say, or what is listed at an official site. I know that at IMDB, which I have contributed to for many years, and tried to make corrections to, they have hundreds of audio/sound credits listed to chose from. On my personal listing at IMDB, it shows numerous different credits but it was all doing the same basic thing.

Anyway, if I can help define TV show credits, please let me know.

And again, glad to be a part....Rob

One weird thing I noticed is that I'll see a couple of pages in a show's opening credits for Producer. There will be about four names, but it's immediately followed by a single name under Produced By. This has long led me to believe there was a distinction, but I have no idea what. Of course, it could have just been a technical thing. I remember at TVRage, I always hated creating new credits (because if anyone did a lot editing, then they surely knew it was looking awfully messy), but if I honestly didn't know what difference there was between an available credit and the one I read onscreen other than a slightly different phrasing I had to add it. Of course, I also noticed there was unnecessary dupes like First Assistant Director and 1st Assistant Director. I'm hoping not to see that become a thing. Then again, there's no way to add new crew types, so maybe that's moot. But, yeah, if there's an index, it might help if one gets kind of stuck on a credit.

We are aware of these useless credits as 1st/2nd and from my experience they'll not be added here, but producer and produced by is literally the same in my opinion.

I agree. At TV.com and TvRage, when I hit a "Produced by..." credit I always just tagged the person as Producer.

I did the same thing with "Executive in charge of production..." and "Executive Producer", even though back in the old film days, that could indicate two different people, one who worked for and was paid by the studio, and one who worked directly on the film.

People have complained about the crew list before, I'm aware that it's currently not complete and that there's some possibly redundant entries. Going over this list and incorporating all the suggestions would be a lot of work though, and I currently don't have the time for that.

If the community would get together and deliver a complete and final list of improvements (items to be added; items to be deleted; items to be merged; descriptions for the various types) I would definitely take them though.

Welcome btw, sounddude!

I'm up for running off a list of yays and nays. I'm assuming you want a new thread for it, instead of hijacking this one.

Yes, that would be great!

What I would need as input would be a conclusive list of:

- Crew Type entries to add

- Crew Type entries to merge (add which one to keep; which one to remove)

- Crew Type entries to remove (any crew credits with this type would be removed as well)

There are two existing threads about this topic, check them out before you start. :)

I think david needs a list of which need to be added and which need to be merged and which need to be removed.

What you gave is a list that needs to be "here" :)

cheers
Juan
