Increase of Genre's?

deleted wrote 10 years ago: 1

I know David updated our page with genres like a few days ago, however some shows aren't able to be defined as it is missing some major genres, especially with talk shows to be honest, might it be possible to add some? I could give you a list of a few suggestions

- History

- Talk show

- Politics

- Educational

- Lifestyle

- Medical

:)

david wrote 10 years ago: 1

Talk show is already available as a show type, so it shouldn't exist as a genre as well. (A show type is a completely objective classification of the show; while a genre is more broad and subjective)

As for the rest, I'm happy to receive suggestions for additional genres, but will judge them very critically as I don't want the amount of genres to spiral out of control :)

I think it would be wise to implement those genres that are available at sites like TVDB or IMDB perhaps :)

JAGUARDOG wrote 10 years ago: 1

I just found yesterday a list of TV shows active and ended, old & new that were missing genres. In the last 2 days I have updated over 50 of them that I could find a genre on however that is a large amount that cannot be updated at this time because not even 1 genre fits for the show in question. If you ever decided to add additional missing genre's I will gladly update quite a few every week until however long it takes it is cleaned up?

These genre's are needed or shows will never be updated with at least a minimum of 1 genre. I have included at least 2 shows as an example of why the genre needs to be added:

Adult/Sex – Masters of Sex AND Strange Sex

Animals/Pets - Everything You Didn't Know About Animals AND The Dog Whisperer

Automobiles/Vehicles – Misfit Garage AND Supercar Superbuild

Buy, Sell & Trade – Comic Book Men AND Pawn Stars

Celebrities - The Nightly Show with Larry Wilmore AND The Daily Show With Jon Stewart

Competition - America’s Next Top Model AND The Voice

Current Events/News - Al Jazeera Investigates AND 60 Minutes

Dance – Dance Moms AND Dancing with the Stars

Discovery/Science - First Peoples AND What Could Possibly Go Wrong?

Educational - Cosmos: A Space-Time Odyssey AND Through the Wormhole

Game Show – Card Sharks AND Hollywood Squares

History - Civil War: Blood on the Battlefields AND Auschwitz: Hitler's Final Solution

How To/Do It Yourself/Home Improvement - Flipping Baltimore AND Rocky Mountain Reno

Interview - Inside the Actors Studio AND StarTalk

Lifestyle - Breaking Amish AND Return To Amish

Medical - Chicago Med AND Cancer: The Emperor of All Maladies

Music – American Bandstand AND The Get Down

Puppets - The Jeff Dunham Show AND The Muppets

Soaps - Days of our Lives AND The Bold and the Beautiful

Sports – WWE Monday night RAW AND WWE SmackDown

Spy/Espionage – I Spy AND The Man From U.N.C.L.E.

Travel - Big Crazy Family Adventure AND Booze Traveler

Variety – America’s Got Talent AND Best Time Ever with Neil Patrick Harris

Genre’s to update or enhance:

FROM Children TO Children/Teens - Bella and the Bulldogs AND Freaks and Geeks

FROM Cooking TO Cooking/Food - Good Eats AND Epic Meal Empire

FROM Anime TO Anime/Animation - Highlander: The Animated Series AND Sonic Boom

There are other genres that are needed however I cannot at this time find any shows that fall under them but I will hopefully at a later date? I would gladly add these genres and any others that are needed in the future if I have access to do this or if I do not could I please be given the access to do this?

Lastly I noticed on the “Create Show” page of the site that Genre is NOT something that is available to be selected or input can this please be added?

deleted wrote 10 years ago: 1

You need to create this page and than edit that specific series again to find another tab with this genre specification

JAGUARDOG wrote 10 years ago: 1

Excuse me, I am very sorry but I have no clue what you are trying to tell me? I need to create what because I have already created a show I need to create something else?

Also what about the adding of missing genre's?

deleted wrote 10 years ago: 1

There was a photo with it, but I guess TVMaze's forum doesn't support those forum codes, but adding those genres is entirely up to David as he told us that he doesn't want too many genre's on TVMaze. He's willing to add some more, but not genre's like 'Soaps' 'Miniseries' & 'Talk shows' for example as they are already specified.

JuanArango wrote 10 years ago: 1

Ron,

to add a genre to the show you always have to create the show first. After that you go to the "edit" button on the bottom of the page, where you edit the show. Then you can add genres to the show :)

Hope that explained it.

As for the amount of genres, david and Jan want to keep it simple with the genres. I would also add a few more (Mystery was just added a week ago, as I highly demanded it), but to add too many genres might also be confusing.

cheers
Juan

JAGUARDOG wrote 10 years ago: 1

OK I understand you want to keep the genre listing low however....

1. First off how can 50 genre's as opposed to 20 genres be confusing? It's confusing to me why to m uch of a good thing would be confusing to anyone?

2. Secondly keeping the genre list low/small like it currently is means you will always have a large listing of shows with no genres as they do not fall into any genre category.

3. Lastly NOT having it on the "Create Show" makes no sense whatsoever because you are causing double work again! Please give me 1 GOOD plausible reason why it should NOT be on the "Create Show" page so they are not missed or forgotten about or someone doesn't get extra lazy by saying to themselves "I'm not going back into this show or any show a second time just to add 1 or more genres I have better more important things to do here first"!

JuanArango wrote 10 years ago: 1

I think the reason that it is not on the "Create Show" option is, that the genres were implanted later, but I guess this should be possible to put them on the "Create Show" page, david needs to answer this.

I also think that we should add a few more genres, but some genres I personally do not feel the need for, but I would also have no problem if they are added :)

cheers
Juan

It should be possible I guess to add it there, but I feel a history genre would be a great deal for me :)

I went through the entire list of suggested genres, and here's my first opinion. Can you weigh in on this Juan?

These seem plausible to add as new genres:

- Adult
- Animals
- Travel
- Medical
- History
- DYI

These seem unneccessary because they're a duplicate of an existing genre/show type:

- Celebrities (pretty much covered by show type: Talk Show)
- Competition (pretty much covered by show type: Reality)
- Current events (equals show type: News)
- Educational (pretty much covered by show type: Documentary)
- Game show (equals show type: Game Show)
- Interview (equals show type: Talk Show)
- Sports (equals show type: Sports)
- Variety (doesnt mean anything at all genre-wise, is a show type already)

These seem too vague, it'd be unclear whether a show does or doesn't belong to this genre:

- Lifestyle
- Soaps
- Discovery
- Politics

These seem too specific, there would be too few shows in this genre to make it worthwhile adding it:

- Spy
- Puppets
- Automobiles
- Buy, Sell & Trade
- Dance

I pretty much agree to everything you said david :)

Maybe Automobiles and Dance could be added, there are quite a few shows covering those two subjects.

cheers
Juan

David, I agree with your list, except the 'Spy' part as there are way more spy/espionage series out there than you really think

David a few points if you do not mind?

1. Was DYI a typo and is really suppose to be DIY because I have no clue what a DYI could possibly be?

2. Celebrities - They are not only on Talk Shows as they appear on some game shows "Celebrity Family Feud", "Celebrity Big Brother", "Celebrity Ghost Stories", "I'm A Celebrity, Get Me Out of Here!", "Celebrity Fit Club", "Celebrity Deathmatch", Celebrity Masterchef" and there are tons more if you need a bigger list?

3. Competition - Is not only for Reality shows - Game Shows, Sports any type, Baseball, Football NFL, The Olympics, Racing (NASCAR), Wrestling

4. Interview is not only Talk Shows also shows like "Extra", "E News", "Entertainment Tonight", "The Dish", "The Soup", "Inside Edition", "The Insider", "OK! TV", "Access Hollywood", "Dish Nation"

5. Soaps - Not belong - "Days of our Lives", "All My Children", "As The World Turns", "General Hospital", "The Young & The Restless", "Dark Shadows", "The Bold and The Beautiful"

6. Discovery/Science should be together - "Through The Wormhole", "First Peoples", "What Could Possibly Go Wrong?", "Myth Hunters", "TV Land: Myths & Legends", "Mythbusters", "How It's Made", "Outrageous Acts of Science", "Cosmos", "How The Universe Works"

7. Espinoage/Spy - I Spy, Man from U.N.C.L.E., The Girl from U.N.C.L.E., Mission: Impossible, The Blacklist, Chuck, Alias, Burn Notice, 24, Covert Affairs, The Americans, Spooks, The Avengers, La Femme Nikita, Secret Agent Man, Hunted, Spy

8. Automobiles - Misfit Garage, Top Gear, Monster Garage, Overhaulin', Counting Cars, Pimp My Ride, Fifth Gear, MotorWeek, Fast N' Loud, Chassing Classic Cars, Used Car Roadshow, Wheeler Dealers, Pinks, Truck U, Rides, Hot Rod TV, My Classic Car, Street Outlaws, All Girl Garage, Car Fix

9. Buy, Sell & Trade - Auction Hunters, Auction Kings, Storage Hunters, Mecum Auctions: Collector Cars and More, Highway To Sell, Natural Born Sellers, Buy It, Sell It, Bank It?, To Buy or Not To Buy, Good Buy/Bad Buy, Around the World in 80 Trades, Family Trade, Million Dollar Traders, American Pickers

10. Dance - Dancing With The Stars, Dance Moms, So You Think You Can Dance, Dance Academy, The Next Step, Bring It, America's Best Dance Crew, Hit the Floor, Shake it Up, DanceX, Fame, Club Dance, All The Right Moves, Strictly Come Dancing, America's Ballroom Challenge, Born To Dance, StarDance, Superstars of Dance

Thank you very much David I can use at least 3 of those on shows I recently added if I can remember their names? Is there a way for me to see a list of all the shows I have added to the site and the date added?

The only way I can think of to check your own edits is to check it here: http://www.tvmaze.com/edit/log?Edit%5Bcreator_id%5D=1983 ,but that will be difficult to find as it is probably very much:P

Yes you are correct as I wasted almost an hour one day trying to make a list of the shows I have added since day 1. I got so upset about it I went to bed! I wish that listing could have a filter so we could filter out the crap we will never, ever need to look back at?
