Genre for wrestling shows ?

MrTimscampi wrote 9 years ago: 1

So, I'm going through a few wrestling shows to add or correct info and there doesn't seem to be any rhyme or reason to the genre they are assigned.

Yesterday, I changed RAW and Smackdown from "Reality" to "Scripted".

RAW is now changed to "Sports", Smackdown remains "Scripted", Ring of Honor is "Reality", New Japan on AXS is also "Reality", so is TNA Impact.
Lucha Underground, the closest any wrestling program has come to a regular TV show in terms of presentation, is still filed as "Sports".

According to the description of the categories, all of the wrestling shows should be "Scripted".
Sports is more suited to something like UFC. Reality doesn't make any sense in this context: wrestling doesn't usually portray "real-life situations". And even when it does, it's not done in a "believable" way like reality TV.

What do you guys thing about it ?

I agree today's wrestling should be scripted, lets see what others say about this.

Don't feel like it should be scripted shows though. It is kind of a sporting show with acting..., but definitely not a scripted!

Well, the promos and matches are scripted (In WWE at least. Other promotions have more improvisation, but they still have a general outline of what need to be said).

The matches serve as a way to tell the stories, much like an action scene would add to the story of a show.

It's more of a TV show about sports than a sport with TV show elements, nowadays.

"Sports" would be more a theme than a genre, in this case.

Don't think it would be sufficient enough to add it as a scripted show. Been watching a documentary about those guys and they consider it an entertainment sport. Reality or Sports is simply better.

I agree, Wrestling shows should be listed as either reality or sports not scripted. Sure it's not completely reality as parts of it are scripted but it's not a real scripted show like Grimm, Big Bang Theory etc.

Indeed, wrestling should not be set to scripted. Scripted is for shows with an actual script; wrestling is partly premeditated but not down to every last detail like in a script.

I think "sports" would be the most accurate fit here.

Sports sits best with me.

Don't want it cluttering up my list of daily scripted shows.

If people feel it's scripted then Variety will be a better fit.

Ok, you all convinced me, "Sports" I vote for too now :)
