Thank you though

I'm sorry that the aspect ratio was off. I had the same problem too when I started, and the learning curve was nerve wracking! I found that a good aspect ratio calculator was very useful! Check out aspectratiocalculator dot com, or if that doesn't work, look for a list of aspect ratio calculators or lists of sizes. All the pics use a 16:9 ratio, which is the usual ratio for tv or computer screens. Hang in there, you got this!

Somi posted a year ago

Thanks for the vote of confidence. However, the aspect ratio is confusing for me with Amazon pics.

Sorry I won't be able to help with Amazon site anymore. I thought I was helping, I guess not.

Thanks

Amazon is a jerk, because they crop their pics different from everyone else. You have to chop them to make them fit, that's all. And you are a help! Truly you are! :)

Episode pics from OWN

blackcat2021 posted a year ago

Hi,

Just wanted to let you know about getting pics from OWN: sometimes when you delete from https://static.oprah.com/2022/12/RDLVC3A1A17_RTL_317_Still13-958x538.jpg "-958x538" you will get instead of 1920x1080px or 3840x2160px a huge 4:3 res pic like 8640x6480px. In this case, usually I use the resolution most ep. have (probably 1920x1080px) and resize the huge pic to 1920x1400px and crop + position to 16:9 (so it will finally be 1920x1080px)

I don't know where you're getting OWN pics from but saw some 1920x1078px :)

Please take any critics from me constructive and don't take it personally. I really appreciate your contribution, I only point to you these things so you can improve. ;)

Blackcat2021

I downloaded the OWN pics from the official website. I have no clue how to crop from 4:3 res to 16:9 so I will just stay away from the OWN and Amazon sites etc. Criticism is always welcomed and taken into consideration.

Somi

Thank! :)

I went to update TLOVM this morning, but you'd already done the pics. Thank you so much! I grumble a lot over updating Amazon shows, since they don't crop their images right. I felt like a heavy weight was lifted off of me when I saw you'd already done it. Image uploading can be the suck sometimes, but oh it's so great when they are finally up. Keep on being awesome :)

Thankyou PandaRed, you just made my day :) ! I'm a newbie to TVMaze, so I'm learning as I go.

1st: you're doing a great job providing new episode pics fast :D but...

Pictures replaced with cropped ones (1600x900px). 4:3 pictures not allowed (only for old shows if they were shot in 4:3)

For an unknown reason Amazon uses the old fashion 4:3 aspect ratio for episode pictures, so when uploading those, the thumbnail will look like being bad cropped, so in this case we crop 1600x1200px (4:3) to 1600x900px (16:9). This includes positioning the 4:3 to the cropped picture (top / bottom / middle / custom) depending on the image content so it looks good on 16:9 aspect ratio.

Here's the difference: (before / after) https://ibb.co/Gdwj4PL  - no more heads and hands cropped :)

I was following the directions on the, "How to get the largest available images from different websites." Which only states to remove SX180. There were no further instructions to crop from 1600x1200px (4:3) to 1600x900px (16:9).

From our policy:

Images in the episode gallery should be an actual scene from the episode. Official promotional images may be used, provided they have exactly the same composition as shown in the public release. That means "behind the scenes" images cannot be used. An episode's main image should be free of major spoilers - suitable for people who have not yet watched the episode.

Since gallery images must be taken from the actual episode, their aspect ratio has to be the same as on the show itself. This is usually widescreen, e.g. 16:9. The image should have a resolution of at least 720p (1280x720), unless the episode was never aired or released in 720p. But please upload the highest resolution that's available for any particular picture. The site will automatically generate thumbnails in various smaller sizes; and the higher the source resolution the better quality they'll be.

Screencaps are allowed to contain a network/webchannel logo, but may not contain any third-party logos or watermarks. Images must not be blurry or have visible compression artifacts (most noticeable in dark scenes) such as in this example.

Any number of images can be added to the episode's gallery, but since only the main image is prominently used, adding more than a few images is not very fruitful. When episode data is likely to be contended because on-screen data conflicts with one of the other valid sources, screengrabs from the episode's title card or credits may be permanently added to the episode gallery to prove the data's validity.

That guide only shows how to get the highest resolution for the episode pics from certain networks :D

Somi posted a year ago

I was assuming if a pic in an episode gallery and has the name of the episode under it, it comes from the episode, not from behind the scenes. The title actually said it was a sneak peak of the episode. I'm not sure how a pic can be a major spoiler, but ok. If an image is suppose to be from an actual episode, I would assume, a sneak peak is considered part of the episode, unless your policy says otherwise. So in the future I will not post sneak peak images from official web sites.

As far as the guide goes, I thought it was provided to help.

The content of the pics was fine, the aspect ratio was not :) it has nothing to do with BTS photos

Those are BTS photos >>  https://www.spoilertv.com/2023/01/the-rookie-episode-513-daddy-cop-press.html for example, that should not be used (usually photos taken on the set by a photographer which would definitely not appear on the actual episode footage => that's the reason that they are not permitted) and because those are available way before the episode airs, some contributors might jump uploading some of those.. but this was not the case.

Summary updates

blackcat2021 posted a year ago

Hi @Somi

Regarding this summary update https://www.tvmaze.com/edit/view?id=16328937 you made:

You replaced a longer summary with a shorter one, but if you open the link for the episode https://www.vicetv.com/en_us/video/sex-taped/630910f919a99158480f0001 , you will find that the longer one you replaced was official :) (and longer), even if what you replaced with, you found on the main page, probably thought that was the official. :) Many networks show a brief summary on the episode listing page.

You did same with https://www.tvmaze.com/edit/view?id=16328943  :)   and https://www.tvmaze.com/edit/view?id=16328775 and https://www.tvmaze.com/edit/view?id=16320626 and https://www.tvmaze.com/edit/view?id=16320680 ... etc

Usually I try to find longer summaries and only post the short ones if I don't find the longer version. Also, I try to take into consideration what kind of summaries were added before (to keep the same format - short or longer)

You can also find longer summaries (besides on the actual episode page) on networks schedule pages (for example for discovery/animal planet/hgtv etc.)

Blackcat2021

Mistakes acknowledged for replacing summaries from shorter to longer. Does this include not replacing summaries that are added but don't check off official web site and read as if though someone made it up, after I read the official summary?

Thanks

Somi

blackcat2021 posted a year ago

From our policy:

The summary may be from an official source - like a network's press release -, may be hand-written or may be a combination of the two. Neither form is preferred over the other; replacing an official summary with a hand-written one is welcome if the hand-written one is of a higher quality, but doing so is not a goal in itself. If the summary was fully copied from an official source, it should be marked as such by checking the proper checkbox.

An official summary can be taken from: (in order of appearance) 1. press release; 2. schedule page; 3. current season with episodes list; 4. episode page.
It's a little hard to "guess" the source of an existing summary. (as of sizes could be - for 1. longer 2. long 3. short 4. long)

As I said, I always look to see what kind of summaries are added (not to alternate short with long ones... because it looks bad on our Episode Guide page).

I've seen added summaries that did not have the official box checked, but it was official. (so I only checked the box)

Upscaled images

Aidan posted a year ago

Hi there

I noticed some of the 4k images you have added (Ghosts, So Help Me Todd, and probably more) have been lower resolution images that have been upscaled to 4k, making them look rather bad with a lot of artifacts etc.

When using a source like Hulu, that let you upscale to any res, it can be hard to tell when 4k is ok or not, but a rule of thumb could be if the show actually airs in 4k or not.

A second look at the image itself doesn't hurt either.

Hope this helps :)

Somi posted a year ago

Hi Aidan

I've been using 3840x2160 or 1920x1080 resolution because I was told resolution 1280x720 was acceptable but could be larger. I had no clue I was upscaling to 4k. How am I suppose to find out if a tv show airs in 4k? I look at the image before its posted but due the previous complaints of low resolution I been posting high or so I thought. So now your telling me I'm still posting lower resolution images, that are upscaled to 4k?

Aidan posted a year ago

Hi

I get your frustration as it's a weird one.

I've mainly been looking at the images for the CBS shows. For the two shows I mentioned the images were extremely pixelated but the other shows, like the FBI shows, are perfectly fine and it doesn't seem like new shows are fine and longer running shows are "bad" either like you could suspect.

East New York and Fire Country are the only CBS shows available in 4k as far as I know.

One way to play it safe is to use CBS sources for their shows (Like CBS.com or Paramount+) and use whatever is the highest quality they offer.
(CBS's promotional photos are usually in the wrong aspect ratio and might not even be a capture from the episode.)

For other sources, especially those that let you choose the size yourself manually, I think it might be better to play it safe and avoid them or at least only do 1920x1080 and have a visual check just to be safe.

Somi posted a year ago

Hi Aidan

I will use CBS.com or Paramount+ for CBS shows for now on and scale resolution down to 1920x1080.

Thanks

Thanks Aidan this helps a lot.

-The Call Me Kat pic came from Hulu Tv

-The Alert pic came from Youtube Tv

I thought both were legitimate sources. However, most of my pics from Youtube Tv, you did not like, so I stopped using it as a source and switched to Hulu. I unfortunately cannot control what the pic looks like from these sources. I will again try and find another source.

Sounds like actually looking at the images and do a quality check before deciding to use them or not would help too.

For the most part fox.com works for images for FOX. They put the episodes up at the same time as they start airing, so no waiting like with the other network sites.
Just double check that they haven't stretched the images as they sometimes do that.

Then just remove the extra code after .jpg at the end of the url and you get the size you want.
