Ratings Roundup for the Week of January 21, 2024

NBC's powerhouse dramas returned with the new year, and network execs breathed a sigh of relief that viewer numbers were comparable to last season. The One Chicago shows once again dominated the ratings, with Chicago Med and Fire pulling in more than six and a half million viewers each. The Law & Order shows were lower, but all of them were significantly higher than Quantum Leap which aired most of its episodes in the fall. That could spell trouble for the time-travelling series. Night Court and Extended Family slipped, however, both are still doing better than any other comedies on the network in the past three seasons and both will likely be renewed.

ABC announced The Good Doctor would wrap after its upcoming seventh season. The ratings for the series have been in a steady decline for the last two years, and with the decision to not move forward with a proposed spin-off, the writing was on the wall for the show's fate. Bad Romance premiered low. Celebrity Jeopardy! wrapped its second season with high enough numbers that it will likely see a third season.

CBS feasted on football ratings as more than fifty million people watched the Chiefs squeak a win against the Bills. A repeat of Fire Country after the game saw a big ratings boost, that unfortunately did not carry over to the repeat on the show's regular night. NCIS Sydney wrapped its first season last week. No word on whether the show will be renewed for the Australian market.

The CW has yet to announce when or even if the few scripted shows renewed after last season will air. Only four scripted shows were renewed by the network at the end of the 2022-23 season: All American, All American: Homecoming, Superman & Lois, and Walker. The network execs seem content to fill the schedule with imported programming, so fans of those shows may be left hanging for the foreseeable future. It was already announced that the upcoming season of Superman & Lois would be the last. With this continued silence regarding the remaining three, bets are good if and/or when those episodes air will be the final season for those shows as well.
