Three Knaves from New Haven Recap

Francine's cousin Bridget Malone tells two men, Blair Devon and Arthur Travis from New Haven, that with the money her neighbor, Mr. Arlington, received for his shop, he was going to move to Bourbon Street. Yancy and Pahoo as Arlington's body is taken away, and Bridget introduces the two men. Blair says that he planned to buy a small strip of the dock that Yancy owns and Yancy agrees to meet them for lunch. He reminds Bridget to consider their offer and leaves with Arthur. Yancy goes into Bridget's shop, and she says that she has a suitor: Joshua Devon, Blair's brother. Yancy is glad to meet him, and Bridget explains that Arlington sold out to Blair for $20,000. The gambler points out the shop was only worth half that, and that night the thieves broke in, took the money, and shots Arlington dead. Now the Devons want to buy Bridget out for $20,000, and she admits that she plans to sell, give Francine the $8,000 she gave her to start up, and have $12,000 left for her dowry. Yancy orders her not to sell.

Later, Yancy visits a sleeping John in his office and wakes him up. Yancy tells him that there are three knaves from Connecticut buying up all the property on Duquesne. John explains that two major railways are putting a spur through New Orleans and a Connecticut company has loaned them a million dollars for the move. The administrator's office has approved the move on the basis of a fair property buyout of the property owners. Yancy points out that there have been two deaths on Duquesne, and now the Devons are offering the same amount to Yancy, Bridget, and pawnshop owner Maurice de Graaf. John wants to arrest the three men, but Yancy points out that he has no charges and says that he'll handle it. The administrator agrees but warns Yancy that if he gets caught, he'll have to hang him as well.

Yancy arrives at the Charter House for lunch and finds Devon meeting with Maurice. Maurice is ready to sign over his property, and is well aware of what happened to the other two owners. Devon says that he can't be held responsible for what happens to money after it leaves his hand, and has Yancy witness Maurice's signature. Maurice leaves and Pahoo follows him, and Yancy asks for the papers. Devon admits that he doesn't have the cash and suggests that they postpone until later at the club.

Arthur intercepts Maurice and asks if he made the deal. The Connecticut businessman confirms that Maurice has the money, but then sees Pahoo watching in plain sight. He wishes Maurice luck and leaves.

Later, Yancy is playing poker at the club when Joshua sits down to play. He introduces himself and explains that he's the other two men's lawyer. Blair and Arthur come in as Yancy and Joshua continue raising on their hands. Joshua finally calls, and Yancy reveals three knaves. The lawyer reveals three bullets and loses.

Joshua goes to see Bridget and they kiss. Yancy comes in and apologizes for intruding. Bridget shows Yancy Joshua's engagement ring, and explains that she's selling the shop to Blair Yancy notes that it's a slick deal and tells Bridget that Joshua doesn't want to marry her. He accuses Joshua of swindling her, but Bridget doesn't believe him. Joshua refuses to respond to Yancy's charges, and tries to sucker-punch him. Yancy punches him and draws his pistol, and Joshua says that he doesn't have a gun. He offers to duel Yancy, and Yancy walks out without a word.

When Joshua leaves, Yancy approaches him and asks him to come with him. He makes it clear that his invitation is mandatory, and takes Joshua to the club. Yancy ties Joshua up and concedes that Joshua might actually be in love with Bridget. Francie agrees to keep him there, and Yancy goes to Bridget to either shake some sense into her or get her out of the city. Out in the hall, Yancy tells Francine to hold Joshua for a half hour and then let him escape.

Maurice comes into the club with Pahoo still following him, and tells Yancy that someone has been following him. He admits that he hasn't put the money somewhere safe yet, and refuses to put it in Francine's safe. Blair comes over and Yahoo tells him that Bridget is turning both brothers down. A shot comes in through the window, wounding Maurice, and Pahoo returns fire. The shooter escapes and Blair secretly takes the $20,000 from Maurice's pocket. The man leaves, supposedly to get a doctor, and Yancy confirms that the money is gone.

Out in the street, Blair meets Arthur and shows him the $20,000. Jody sees them from the shadows, as Blair tells Arthur that they Bridget is pulling out of the deal and they have to get to her. As they walk Jody, he "accidentally" bumps into Blair and pickpockets his wallet. Yancy and Pahoo grab Jody, and Yancy offers Jody $50-for the wallet. When Pahoo draws his shotgun, Jody "remembers" the wallet and turns it over. The pickpocket is shocked to learn that he just lost $20,000 when Yancy counts it.

Bridget is at her shop when Blair and Arthu knock at the door. She asks if something has happened to Joshua. Blair doesn't answer and Bridget opens the door. Blair tells her to sign the papers, but Bridget refuses to deal with anyone but Joshua. The two men grab her and she assumes that they've killed Joshua. Blair draws a gun on her and she reluctantly starts to sign. However, Joshua barges in and Bridget runs to him. He tells Blair to hand over the deed, and Blair says that Bridget isn't worth it. Furious, Joshua says that Blair duped him and threatens to take the deed. Arthur attacks him while Blair grabs Bridget. Yancy and Pahoo break in and Yancy knocks out Arthur while Pahoo guns down Blair when he goes for his gun. Joshua hugs Bridget and mourns Blair's death, and thanks Yancy for not tying him tightly.

Later at the administrator's office, Yancy reports that Maurice will pull through and gives the $20,000 to John to give to Maurice. Bridget won't be able to sell, but Joshua says that he'll be taking law offices above Bridget's shop once they marry. Yancy apologizes to Joshua, and John says that the Board of Governors has denied the railroad's petition. He refuses to tell Yancy where they're moving the depot outside of New Orleans, and escorts Yancy and Pahoo from his office.
