American Horror Story Season 6 Premiere review

73f33de62aea7f09e03880e48402fa29194b8baaAmerican Horror Story recently returned for it's sixth season on FX and, for me, it really does go back to basics. I was a huge fan of the first season, hated the second, was bored by the third which involved witches and teenage girl drama, and the fourth I was disgusted by. The fifth season I didn’t even bother watching. An aspect of the fourth season and the second season that really made my stomach turn was how closely tied sexuality and violence appeared to be within the show, let me specify what I mean by this - in the fourth season - 'Freak Show', a clown was stabbing someone in the stomach and a girl was orgasming. Those scenes would cut back and forth to one another. In the second season - 'Asylum' a girl was trying to seduce a doctor and he cut her legs off. That, for me, is something not worth watching.

But, season 6, called Roanoke, appears to have a more spooky, haunting story rather then focusing on horror and gore. And the first episode was pretty good in my opinion. An aspect I have been enjoying so far this season, is the show-within-a-show documentary style that they are using. This allows the viewers to write off some of the things that he or she sees in the “reenactment” because they are exactly that. This season appears to be telling the story of the settlers in Roanoke who disappeared, with Kathy Bates appearing as the leader of this group. Matt Miller (played by Cuba Gooding Jr. in re-enactments and Andre Holland playing the real life version) and Shelby Miller (played by Sarah Paulson in re-enactments and Lily Rabe playing the real life version), decide to buy an old home in North Carolina. Dead pigs, twigs in the shape of witches, and creepy villagers begin to appear on the property or in the house shortly after the Millers move in and they decide to confront this issue head on. Matt's sister, Lee (played by Angela Bassett in re-enactments and Adina Porter in real life), moves in as he is worried about Shelby.

The thing I enjoyed about this premiere was that it was spooky and tense, which reminded me of the first season of the show. It wasn’t gross and sexual - rather, it was similar to a scary movie rather than a horror movie, if you will.

I plan on watching the rest of the season and will provide an update if I find I can no longer watch the show, but so far so good. Have you checked out American Horror Story - My Roanoke Nightmare? And if so, what did you think?

I also find this reenactment style of telling the story appealing . I'm very curious to see where this season takes us .
