And so with "If We Make It through December" the threat of Bulshar manifests. Slightly.
And Wynonna gets a new ally. And Nedley comes to a decision. And Michelle hacks up a turkey. And the Earp Christmas tree gets its menstru-angel back.
So it was a busy week on Wynonna Earp. Not a lot happened, but sometimes it's the little things. And this week had a lot of little things.
To recap: a young boy gets adept from a Christmas tree lot where Nedley is doing his annual Santa. Nedley freezes up, and Nicole leads the search for the boy. This brings her into contact with Charlie, a member of Purgatory's "Fire Services". Which is the cover a group of anti-demon non-Earp types use in Purgatory. Most of them were wiped out or something in season 2.
Meanwhile, Michelle (Ma Earp, Megan Follows) is busy celebrating her first Christmas with her daughters. This involves her taking down the "Menstru-angel" that Waverly and Wynonna put up every year (it's made out of tampons). Wynonna doesn't take well to this intrusion on her space.
Wynonna also tells Waverly what she learned about Waverly's father being an angel. Waverly wants to question Michelle about it, but Michelle isn't initially too interested in talking about it. She does say Julian got her pregnant and left, and Bobo (Michael Eklund) was present at Waverly's birth in the greenhouse. So Waverly visits Bobo in the well, and he finally says that he "just happened" to be there and then took the baby to Ward and ordered him to raise it as his own.
Meanwhile, Bulshar and his "beekeepers" (that's what they call them) are busy capturing descendants of the first families of Purgatory. Which includes the abducted boy at the beginning, and Robin who was abducted two episodes ago. They take them to an abattoir and force-feed them plant sap or something. We never find out why.
The beekeepers have made Tim's disappearance look like a mysterious death in the forest, spreading pig's blood around to make it convincing. Jeremy, who is worried Robin is ghosting him, determines the blood is pig's blood. That leads Wynonna to the abattoir, and she asks Charlie to help her. They break in, kill the beekeepers, and free the prisoners.
Nedley admits to Nicole he froze up and appoints her the new sheriff. Because I guess he can do that.
Jeremy and Robin get back together, share a kiss (because they're gay, don't you know?), and decide to have Christmas dinner together.
Wynonna and Doc figure the blood means Kate has something to do with Tim's disappearance. They visit her, and Doc realizes she's a vampire. Wynonna realizes Doc and Kate slept together. Neither are too thrilled by the news. This drives Wynonna into Charlie's arms and they make out in his fire truck. Doc goes back to Kate, and she ends up turning him into a vampire because that will somehow cure her. Or bring them back together. Or something. Writers Emily Andras and Matt Doyle didn't seem too clear on this point.
And the Earps sit down for a happy family dinner that goes okay. Except for all the things above, which didn't have any impact on the Christmas dinner. Afterward, Michelle lets Bobo out of the well in return for information about her baby-daddy, Julian.
Just like the episode was a lot of little plots mixed together, there were a lot of little character bits mixed in. Doc hauls a Christmas tree around looking for someone to give it to. Michelle doesn't want it in the homestead because it might have mites. Jeremy is allergic to pine. This leads to a cute scene where Doc gives Jeremy romantic advice on how to get back with Robin. Which seems out of character for a real-life Doc. But this is SyFy, where people are comfortable with homosexuality no matter what century they're born in.
And Jeremy is gay, don't you know? He does get teased about shaving off his mustache.
The minor fight over the Menstru-angel is cute. Waverly dressing like an elf and seducing Nicole is cute. Charlie (Sebastian Pigott, Channel Zero among others) is cute in a harmless kind of way. They toss in an off-handed explanation for why Kate is a Black American small-nosed woman instead of a Hungarian big-nosed woman, which is cute because a) I've griped about it in the past, and b) the creative team thought they had to explain it. Which is more than a lot of shows would do.
So overall, "If We Make It" is a decent non-seasonal Christmas episode. It's not the first time SyFy has done Christmas episodes other time of the years (hi, Haven!), and I'm sure it won't be the last. The episode moved along the existing plot threads and presumably gave Doc and Tim Rozon a little more to do as a vampire. Doc has been at loose ends since Wynonna got rid of Alice and he lost his immortality, hasn't he?
And there's a mystery or two. Like what is Bobo's connection to Waverly and Michelle? And what is Bulshar up to, with the seeds in people's mouths and feeding them sap? Particularly since it looks like Robin is "infected".
But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. What do you think?
