And so with "I Fall to Pieces" we get a week of personal revelations, and not much else happens.
To recap: Wynonna and Charlie from last week are making out in a fire truck in the fire department. Nicole and Waverly show up to schmooze the firemen into supporting Nicole as the new sheriff. Wynonna sets off the truck's siren and then leaves, trying to pass it off as nothing. And that's all that we see of Charlie (Sebastian Pigott).
Doc is sleeping with Kate, and she's all possessive of Doc and jealous of Wynonna. Even though she's made Doc a vampire at the end of last week's episode. Bulshar's ring now burns Doc's finger where he's wearing it.
Nedley calls Wynonna and Nicole in to clean out his hidden closet of supernatural relics. They break a mirror while arguing about something, and we see a lightning bolt hit a building somewhere. A big mountain man type (Ross Clendening, who is only credited as "Mountain Man") comes out.
Meanwhile, we find out Nicole doesn't like Wynonna because she doesn't follow the rules. And Wynonna doesn't like Nicole because she's a big rule-follower. Wish they had played this up a bit since they introduced Nicole back in the day. If they did, I don't recall it. They play this up big this week, and we find out Nedley had them clean the closet to work together.
Anyhoo, Nicole is meeting with the head of the town council, Bunny Lublaw (Jann Arden). She's a stuck-up older woman who doesn't think much of homosexuals. Bunny suggests making Wynonna the sheriff instead of Nicole, and Wynonna goes along with it more to bug Nicole than anything. The Mountain Man peers in the window, and Bunny sees him and has a heart attack or something.
We get what becomes a string of recurring bad luck, although like with another Friday show, Stan Lee's Lucky Man, it's hard to tell if it's supernatural (bad) luck or just TV-story bad luck. Some frat boys steal Nicole's cruiser with Bunny in the back and take it to a revenant roadhouse. When Nicole and Wynonna have Jeremy track the GPS and follow it there, Nicole's key breaks in the lock. They go in, encounter the revenant leader Rolf and his bikers, and have a drinking contest.
The bikers handcuff Wynonna and Nicole together, and Wynonna challenges Rolf to a drinking contest. He realizes Wynonna is cheating, and Wynonna and Nicole run out. The revenants catch up to them, and the women work together to defeat most of them. Rolf prepares to kill them, but the Mountain Man shows up and kills Rolf with... a big pair of garden shears? I wish they'd explain this guy a little more.
W&N get back to the station, while Waverly and Jeremy have found the mirror and tried to reassemble it. They do, but it doesn’t stop the Mountain Man when he shows up. He demands either Wynonna or Nicole become his wife. Meanwhile, Waverly realizes W&N also broke a female gnome statue. She and Jeremy put it together, and the Mountain Man calls it Monique and goes off with it to... somewhere. Again, I wish we knew more about the guy.
Bunny comes back and Wynonna basically blackmails her into letting Nicole become sheriff. Wynonna has also found a photo of young Nedley with a very young Nicole, and realizes Nedley saved Nicole after the massacre. She goes to thank him and Nedley admits she's the daughter he never had. Awww.
Meanwhile, Michelle has convinced Doc to drive her around. She goes to the cemetery to apologize to Willa at Willa's grave. Michelle then gets ready to leave Purgatory to find Julian, the angel she fell in love with. She reveals she knows Doc is a vampire, and we later find out she leaves a note for Wynonna saying not to trust Doc.
At the end, Doc comes visiting and Wynonna demands the truth. He admits he's a vampire and she realizes he can't enter the homestead uninvited. So she revokes her invitation to him to come in. And I wish I knew the rules for how vampires work in the Wynonna Earp universe. They seem fine with sunlight, but can't enter a home uninvited? Can they cross running water? Are they repelled by holy symbols? Like with the Mountain Man, I get the impression the creative team is trying to come up with a new mythology but they're not slowing down to explain it.
So the secret of Doc's vampiric existence doesn't last long. Nicole and Wynonna resolve an issue we didn't know they had. Megan Follows as Michelle leaves the series until they decide to bring her back. And the creative team pretty much firms up Nicole's position as the new sheriff of Purgatory.
As you can tell from the recap, the episode was crammed with stuff. And the bits like vampire Doc and Mountain Man/bad luck seemed awfully rushed. Hope you didn't know why the Mountain Man was married to a gnome statue, or there was a mirror that breaking it caused bad luck. Because writer Noelle Carbone sure didn't want to tell us.
Katherine Barrell and Greg Lawson are good as always, in their brief father/daughter-ish scene. Melanie Scarfano actually had something to do: For a show named Wynonna Earp, Wynonna has been a secondary character for most of the season. There was a certain amount of dialing the character up to 11 this week, but that's better than keeping her at a 2-3.
And Tim Rozon as Doc got some bite. Pardon the pun. Admittedly, the "bad choices" the character has made this season have been more the creative team mucking around with the character than anything Rozon has done. But at least Wynonna called him on some of his bad decisions.
But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. What do you think?
