And so with "Waiting Forever for You", another week, another vampire. We did get some progression on the continuing storyline. What? Let's find out.
The episode basically breaks down into three parts. Wynonna pays a visit to Kate to find out why she transformed Doc into a vampire. They have a woman-to-woman chat instead of killing each other, and we get some backstory about how Kate was a fortuneteller in Purgatory back in the day. Bulshar was Bulshar Clootie and Constance (aka the Stone Witch) was his wife. Doc defended Kate, they end up in bed, and Doc left Kate. She became a vampire, thanks to her Uncle Otto, to follow Doc after Constance made Doc immortal and tossed him in a well. Since then, Kate has been roaming the earth looking for Doc. Or so she says. It seems odd that she wouldn't hang around Purgatory: did she think Constance hauled Doc off to Japan or the Middle East or Hungary?
It turned out Kate foretold "The Lovers" as Bulshar's future. Which means the Garden of Eden. Which means the Garden of Eden is in the Ghost River Triangle and Bulshar is looking for it. All-righty.
Wynonna tries to have a date night with Charlie, and they end up at Purgatory's best restaurant. Which is a diner that serves free breadsticks. The funniest part of the episode is watching Wynonna try to butter her breadstick from one of those little disposable butter cups. And also leads to Charlie calling her "Buttercup" later.
When Wynonna hears Doc is biting people (more below), she takes off and Charlie lures Doc to Shorty's with a fake text message from Wynonna, and then traps him a rope circle with the rope soaked in holy water. So, Wynonna Earp vampires are susceptible to holy water and being uninvited, but not daylight. I don't mind the rules are "different" than standard vampires: I just wish they'd say what they are at one time.
Bulshar has resurrected Constance and sent her to find the three Tarot cards Kate used in her reading in the flashback, and Doc took for some reason. Constance shows up at Shorty's, and Charlie frees Doc and Doc punches her heart out with his new vampire strength. The two men decide to team up, banter about Wynonna, and end up letting Constance escape in Doc's car.
Meanwhile, in subplot 3, Waverly and Nichole hold a BGD (Big Gay Dinner) for Jeremy and Robin. Earlier, Doc attacked Robin in the forest and tried to bite him, but gave it up thinking he tasted like dirt. Robin starts rambling about talking tree roots while licking a potato. And Bulshar's ring pops up in one of Nicole's biscuits. Robin crouches in the barn and rambles on about how the trees don't like the fact Bulshar is controlling them. Constance shows up looking for the cards, which are stored in the barn. Waverly slips on Bulshar's ring and punches Constance across the barn. We end up with Wynonna and Kate arriving at the barn and then tracking Constance. She's waiting for them, and in a relatively gentle moment, mutely implores Wynonna to put her out of her misery by shooting her with Peacemaker. Wynonna does so, and everyone joins up at the end to put together that Bulshar is looking for the aforementioned Garden of Eden in the Triangle. As Doc and Wynonna meet in the barn and come to an understanding of sorts, Bulshar arrives and blows dust in their faces. The end.
Also, Kate decides to leave Purgatory, having figured out Wynonna and Doc are meant for each other and she's not. So having dumped her load of exposition, I guess the creative team doesn't see any reason for her to stick around.
So we're left with Constance dead for good, Bulshar casting some kind of spell on Wynonna and Doc, Waverly having the ring of power, and Justin apparently partially possessed and/or having a mental link to Bulshar. There are some parts that are glossed over--why did Doc take the Tarot cards, and why Did Bulshar need The Lovers to apparently tell him what he was already looking for?--but either they'll explain all that or not bother.
There are lots of cute moments. Jeremy and Wynonna bonding in an initial pool-shooting scene at Shorty's. Charlie and Wynonna's dinner date. Doc stalking through the woods before attacking Robin. Waverly complaining about Constance ruining her dinner party. Jeremy going on (and on, and on) about how nervous he is about having a steady. Charlie and Doc alternating between hating each other, and Doc boasting about the trunk space in his car, and Charlie providing a blood bag for Doc when he collapses due to lack of feeding. Sebastian Pigott as Charlie is good interacting with both Melanie Scrofano and Tim Rozon.
There weren't any bad parts. Kate's role seemed to be more as an exposition dump than as a living (or unliving) character. Over three seasons and three years, I've kind of lost track of the back story so I guess I didn't remember Bulshar was the sheriff at some point. How did he become a demon?
Greg Lawson is credited but if he appears it must have been a blink-and-you'll-miss it moment. Or his scene got cut.
So we've got four more episodes to go and it looks like Wynonna Earp is moving into the end game. The Triangle protects the Garden of Eden (??), and Bulshar is after it. It presumably ties into Waverly's angel-daddy Julian in some manner, and probably Michelle will show up again. What Bulshar's endgame is, who knows?
The creative team doesn't hesitate to pack a lot into an hour episode, particularly near the season finale, so there's no point in trying to predict what will happen. What will happen, will happen.
But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. What do you think?
