"Egg MacGuffin" – DC's Legends of Tomorrow S04E13 Review

Brandon Routh and Adam Tsekhman step up.

Let's face it: DC's Legends of Tomorrow hasn't been kind to both of them. Their characters Ray and Gary have been in plenty of episodes. But they've been played almost entirely for comic relief. This season Ray has gone from abandoned bro to wannabe captain to romantic love interest. Gary has been a goof since day one and hasn't really changed. "Egg MacGuffin" didn't really change that, but at least it made him a threat to go with his goofiness.

How did they get that way? It's part of the Neron/possession situation, with Neron possessing Ray and trying to force him to kill a loved one to corrupt his soul and make him a permanent host for the demon. Since Ray and Nate are bros, that means that most of the attempts are against Nate as Routh does the "my hand has a mine of its own" routine over and over. He tries and fails to stab Nate when Nate's back is turned.

Nate has problems of his own and doesn't notice. The problems? He and Zari are awkward around each other, and Sara figures they need to jump each other's bones. She sends them off on a mission to 1933 to recover a golden egg artifact that an archaeologist (John Murphy) has found. The archaeologist has taken it to the Adventurers' Club in NYC and is presenting it to the members. Two Nazi agents want the egg, the egg has been replaced, and it turns out that the assistant Vincent (Amitai Mormorstein) has stolen the egg. Sara and Ava show up and help Zari recover the egg and beat up Nazis.

Nate goes back to Waverider and confronts Ray. Ray somehow knocks him out and agrees to be Neron's host body willingly rather than have Neron kill Nate. Meanwhile, Constantine (Matt Ryan) tries to destroy Neron, but Neron returns Gary's missing nipple. Gary, having realized he's everybody's doormat, agrees to serve Neron and disappears with Ray/Neron.

Where are Mick, Charlie, and Mona? Charlie has discovered that Mick was invited to Romanti-con 2019. Or rather, his writer's alias "Rebecca Silver" was invited and offered $20,000 to reveal herself to the world. Charlie and Mick figure they can get the money, but since Mick is... well, Mick, Charlie poses as "Rebecca". Mona learns "Rebecca" is going to be there, recognizes Charlie (I don’t know why she didn't shapeshift, but instead just puts on glasses), and confronts her. Mick steps out and speaks passionately about his writing and the connection they've all made to his characters.

Mona was having book club with Ava and a comatose Nora. In what I thought was the funniest bit, Ava wants Sara to join the book club. Sara reads the book and actually likes it, and Ava admits she just uses the book club as an excuse to drink and veg out while Mona rambles on about their books.

Oh, and when Nora comes out of her coma thanks to a magical cure by Constantine, Ava offers her membership in the Time Bureau. And we found out the egg is a dragon's egg.

Needless to say, there was a lot going on this week. There were lots of Indiana Jones jokes and references in the 1933 scenes. Sara sets Zari and Nate up with "Marion Ravenwood" and "Henry Jones" as their fake IDs. There are Nazis, and in the end Zari does the "Where doesn't it hurt" kissing scene from Raiders of the Lost Ark with Nate as they finally give into their feelings. I'm not strongly against them as a couple, but I'm not strongly for it, either. It's just... there.

"Egg McGauffin" is a lot like Zari and Nate's relationship. It's just there, although it has some funny scenes. Maisie Richardson-Sellers is still ten times more lively as Charlie than Amaya. Mick gets to reveal his warmer inner self. Again. Mona almost wolfs out at one point but other than that just provides comic relief and complicates the situation.

A good chunk of the episode is dedicated to Ray and Nate's bromance. They hug, and Neron/Ray tries to break Nate's neck. There's a lot of Routh mugging as Ray tries to fight off his demonic possession and eventually has to turn to Gary for help since he's an "intern of the dark arts" under Constantine's half-hearted tutoring.

Overall, "Egg MacGuffin" was a nice interlude that set the stage for the last few episodes. Nora is a Time Agent, Neron has cut loose and will presumably bring Tabitha into the real world. And he has Gary as a lackey, so one suspects a Wormtongue-type performance is coming. The rest of the team, and the story, seem to be in disarray. But that's often how DC's Legends goes. Then the creative team wraps it up in the last few episodes and we're done for the season. Will that happen this year? We'll see.

But that's just my opinion, I could be wrong. What do you think?
