Ratings Roundup for the Week of January 1, 2023

Welcome to 2023 and the Winter season! Networks will be premiering their second batch of freshman shows in the coming weeks. Usually shows in the winter batch of premieres still have a slight chance for renewal. (Unlike the Spring shows which are there basically to fill air time.) Historically, ratings are also a little lower after the holidays than in the fall. The thing to watch is where your favorite shows fall on the network chart. If it is in the upper half, chances are good it will be renewed. Down on the low end? Odds are not as good the show will survive to May.

CBS gave fans of Fire Country some good news last week. The drama was the first freshman show renewed by the network. Fans responded to the news by boosting the ratings by almost a full tenth of a point and adding a million viewers since its last new episode at the beginning of December. So Help Me Todd saw its ratings number increase, though its audience numbers remained the same. It will likely be renewed. CSI: Vegas lost both ratings and viewer numbers on its return. Right now, it is the lowest-rated drama on the network, so fans will have another tense few months waiting to see if the show gets a third season.

ABC premiered Will Trent to middling numbers last week. The drama will have its work cut out if it wants to survive. The Rookie premiered on a new night and roared back with a gain of two tenths and over a million viewers. Clearly, the better night and time slot helped. The Rookie: Feds also benefitted from its new timeslot behind its parent show, picking up a ratings tenth and more than a million viewers. The Parent Test picked up a couple hundred thousand viewers but slipped on the network chart with the return of the network's regular fare.

NBC premiered America's Got Talent: All Stars last week to good numbers. Quantum Leap returned after a two-month hiatus down three hundred thousand viewers. Lopez vs Lopez was down two hundred thousand viewers. Young Rock shed another three hundred thousand viewers it couldn't afford. The chances of either comedy getting a renewal are slim.

Things do not look good for it to get a third season. Welcome to Flatch and Call Me Kat each managed to pick up one hundred thousand viewers.

Any news on how NBC's The Wheel did during your ratings break? It aired over 10 nights from 19th-30th December.
Reason I ask, I like the Original UK version & the host, Michael McIntyre, who also hosts the US version.
I did get to watch all 10 of the US version & it was ok, with a few minor differences; I just didn't know who half of the "Celebrities" on it were! :)

It's hard to say. It averaged ~3 million viewers over the ten nights, but it was just about the only thing airing that wasn't a repeat between Christmas and New Year's, so take that for what it's worth. Chances are it will be renewed as it did a good job plugging schedule holes during the holiday break and it's cheap to produce.
