Tom Beresford came to Skelthwaite in 2002 with his children Joe and Molly to take over from Henry as assistant manager of Goddard's. However Tom had grown up in Skelthwaite, but when he was still at school he managed to get his girlfriend Emily Pregnant. They had to leave the town following the reaction of Tom's mother. Tom and Emily got married and had Joe and Molly but Emily had died giving birth to Molly.
On the same day that they moved back, Tom met Beth Enwright and managed to enrage her by wolf whistling at her. Tom and Beth both pretended for a while that they disliked each other but Beth help Tom reconcile with his mother. At the same time Tom was put in charge of the factory following Simon's departure and he took Simon's place on the team. He also bought Vic's house and he, Joe and Molly moved in there.
Tom and Beth shared a kiss at Vic's leaving party and for a while both tried to deny their feelings for each other (Beth had even gone on a date with Joe). When Molly pretended she was ill so she could get out of school (because she was being bullied), Tom thought she had Meningitis (there had been a scare in the area). Beth managed to help Molly though and Tom and Beth couldn't deny there feelings anymore and got together as a couple. However Joe was upset by this feeling his mother was being forgotten and managed to convince Molly of this, making Molly dislike Beth as well. However when Tom was told by Karen that Beth was going for a job in holland he was gutted and Joe realised it was more than a fling. Joe decided to accept Tom and Beth's relationship and managed to convince Molly as well. Beth turned the job down and she and Tom reconciled.
In 2003 Tom and Beth were still together and Tom decided to get a dog in a subtle attempt to get Beth to move in. But Beth was expecting a proposal and got Tom jealous by flirting with skippy the new barman at the Pub. Tom was eventually told by Billy what was going on and he proposed to Beth and she said yes.
Later in the year Beth discovered she was pregnant and she and Tom were over the moon. Beth did have to talk Molly round. However the joy was short lived as Beth was rushed to hospital and it was discovered she had suffered an ectopic pregnancy. Tom, just like when Emily died just had to wait for news but thankfully it had a happier outcome as Beth pulled through. However Beth had a hard time coping with it and the realisation that she had no real family and called off the wedding. However Tom made her see that she was part of his family and he wasn't going to let her walk out of his, Joe and Molly's lives. This did the trick and Beth and Tom got married a couple of weeks later. At christmas Beth discovers that she is pregnant again.
In 2004 the factory is in trouble and Tom declines to tell Beth about what is going on making Beth think he is ignoring her. However they manage to sort it out and Tom tells Anna that he has heard of a businessman who could save them called Ozias Harding who would invest in the business. However he took full control of the factory leaving Tom surplus. the breaking point came when Ozias sacked Joe for no good reason and Tom quit. Tom tried to stop Ozias from ruining the factory for good but when Ozias suffered a brain aneurysm there was the fear that if he died Goddards was finished. However he didn't and Ozias managed to change his ways.
However it wasn't all bad news for Tom because on that same day that everything came to a head at the factory, Beth gave birth to their son Victor.
In 2005 Tom was offered a job in Wales and when Beth quit her job as a nurse because she couldn't be both a mother and a nurse at that time there was little reason to turn it down. Joe decided to stay in Skelthwaite so Tom, Beth, Molly, Victor and Raggy the dog left Skelthwaite behind.
