Alex Klima is an old world gentleman, cultured and distinguished. A skilled psychiatrist, Alex has always been interested in pursuing the complexities of the human mind and relishes a rigorous intellectual debate. However, over the years his passion for psychiatry has faded as the majority of his patients seem to mainly require medication management and often he struggles to engage them in the psychoanalytical process.
When Simon turns up, he is a refreshing change and much more interested in drawing Alex into intellectual sparring matches than progressing his treatment. Alex finds himself engaging on an increasingly personal level with this fascinating, highly intelligent young man.
In his own way, Alex is not dissimilar to Simon. He isn't driven by money or career success, and has no interest in building up his practice for the sake of it. Partially this impracticality drove his wife crazy, leading to the disintegration of his marriage which Alex finds deeply distressing; he adores his two children and has been struggling to live away from the family, barely functioning in his new bachelor existence.
