Bart served with the Confederate Army during the Civil War. Afterward, he married Janet and swore on a Bible that he would never take up a gun again. They moved to Porter and had a daughter, Debby. Bart took a job at the Travers ranch.
However, Bart's brother Rave and his associate, the killer Praeger, arrived in Porter and demands food and money from Bart. He gave them food and a place to hide out in the hills, but had no money. Travers was soon robbed and died of his injuries. Suspicion fell on Bart after Debby overheard her father talking to the two men and told Hoby. Ultimately, Hoby joined forces with Bart to stop Rave and Praeger from riding the Porter bank. Hoby was forced to kill Praeger at the bank, and Bart captured Rave and kept his word to make sure he stayed safe.
