Vice Admiral Anthony Haftel is introduced to us in the episode The Offspring with composed by Ron Jones and is depicted as a mad scientist from Starfleet Research. He is sent to The Enterprise D with not so pleasant news. He begins by disturbing our captain in the middle of his sleep and is very sarcastic about it. Later, he indicates that, because of the terrible disaster that occurred with Doctor Richard Daystrom's M5 Multitronic Tactical Unit, it is completely unacceptable for Data to be creating Androids. Haftel demonstrated a fear of Artificial Intelligence, and warned others to stop being sentimental. He also demonstrated Data's new Daughter Lal obviously has wasted potential after viewing her training in a social structure environment as being nothing more than a Cocktail Waitress. With Picard's unexpected backing, Data had successfully debunked the issues about M5. Haftel countered the argument by saying since Data had far exceeded Romulan Cybernetics thus Star Fleet was unwilling to contribute to The Enterprise's ongoing defense. Haftel also hinted that he lost custody of his children, claiming that it would make them safe. He ordered Lal into his custody immediately, while Captain Picard said that it is an obvious abuse of power. Since Lal was not given time to prepare for a move, which by the way puts any child into a state of shock, she searched for Deanna, informing her that she is scared. Confirming this, Deanna and Lal walked together to the nearest science lab. She told Picard and Data about what happened with Haftel accompanying them. Unable to lose any more time to bickering with Haftel, Data gladly accepted Haftel's support as they attempt to save Lal from a system failure. Haftel's final lines in the episode indicate that he no longer has prejudice towards offspring nor artifical intelligence, as well as a combination of both. Haftel reported that Lal was Killed In Action in an attempt to thwart The Romulans from pursuing her.
