A detective with the British police force, DCI Morton is a former FBI agent who has been based in the UK for over 25 years, after falling in love with a local woman when he was investigating at Lockerbie.
Morton is summoned to Fortitude following the gruesome murder, and is single-minded in his pursuit of the truth, not caring who he upsets in the course of the investigation. His methods quickly gain him enemies in the small town, including hostility from the local police.
