The marriage of Dave and Patty Toma is seriously threatened when Patty refuses to reveal information about a vicious shakedown racket in which her former boy friend is involved.

During a visit with her friend Edie Angelus, whose husband Jack was Patty's beau before she met Dave, Patty learns that her friends are in some kind of trouble with underworld figures. Patty reluctantly agrees not to tell Dave of their problems, but Dave senses that something has come between himself and Patty. When Dave learns that Jack Angelus is tied in with several notorious hoodlums, he jumps to the conclusion that Patty's secretiveness may be rooted in long-sustained feelings for Jack.
