Jean-Claude Van Damme

Born in Berchem-Sainte-Agathe, Brussels, Jean-Claude Van Damme began training in the martial arts at the age of ten, and took up ballet at the age of 16. Lifting weights improved his physique, which eventually led to a Mr. Belgium bodybuilding title in 1978. He first appeared on film in an uncredited role in the 1979 movie Een vrouw tussen hond en wolf (Woman Between Wolf and Dog). Determined to become an actor in America, he took a loan to open the California Gym, banking his earnings in preparation for his move to the Hollywood. Working menial jobs, and taking English classes, he began picking up jobs as an extra, appearing in the 1984 films Breakin' and Missing in Action before landing his first credited role in Monaco Forever.
