Born in Los Angeles, California, Alexis Arquette (born Robert Arquette) was the fourth of five children in a family of entertainers. In his younger years the family lived in a commune, but moved to Los Angeles so that his sister Rosanna could pursue an acting career. By age 16 Robert was going by the name 'Alexis', and while accompanying Patricia to an audition in New York, made an impression on the producers who offered her the role of the young transvestite Georgette in Last Exit to Brooklyn. Her decision to transition to female was documented in the 2007 film Alexis Arquette: She's My Brother. From 2013 until her death in 2016 she would alternate between living as a man.
