Mitch Landrieu was born on August 16, 1960, in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, as Mitchell Joseph Landrieu. He was the fifth of nine children born to Moon and Verna Landrieu and grew up in New Orlean's Broadmoor neighborhood. After graduating from Jesuit High School, he enrolled at The Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. In 1985, he earned a Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from Loyola University Law School in New Orleans. He married Cheryl P. Quirk, and they have five children.
Landrieu was a member of the Louisiana House of Representatives from 1988 to 2004 and the lieutenant governor of Louisiana from 2004 to 2010. Landrieu served as the mayor of New Orleans, Louisiana, from 2010 to 2018. He was first elected in 2010 and won re-election to a second term in 2014.
