Born in Wilmington, Delaware, John Gallagher Jr. was raised in a musical family, which led to an early career as a singer/songwriter where he played in a half-dozen bands ranging from rock, to pop to punk music. He appeared on stage in the early 2000s, receiving critical acclaim for his role in Rabbit Hole which marked his Broadway debut. In 2001 he appeared as Gary in the TV movie The Flamingo Rising, followed in 2002 by appearances in Law & Order and The West Wing.
