Born in Brooklyn, New York, Terry Carter graduated from high school in 1946 and enlisted in the merchant marine to see the world. He enrolled at Northeaster University in Boston to study pre-law, working weekends as a piano player in nightclubs and special events. Believing that drama training would benefit him in the courtroom, he began taking acting classes in the evenings, eventually dropping out of school to pursue acting full time. His professional career began on stage, with the move to television in 1955, as Private Sugarman, the only black regular cast member of The Phil Silvers Show.
