The Magician, Anthony Blake, witnesses an attempt on the life of his friend and associate, columnist Max Pomeroy, and sets out with his magic craft to find the would-be assassin. With a license plate number as a clue, Blake traces the suspect's car to a rental agency which names compulsive gambler Diane Thompson as renter of the car. Further investigating by Blake links the attempted killing to Pomeroy's series of articles exposing illegal gambling.
