Summoned to stop a series of vicious train robberies, Dave Barrett goes after the gang aboard a speeding train, unaware the ringleader is a vengeful woman, played by guest star Ida Lupino, in the premiere of ‘‘The Manhunter,” series starring Ken Howard, Wednesday on the CBS television network.
BARRETT’S attempt to set a trap for the robbers is threatened by newspaper reporter Ben Marks, who insists on following him, in ‘“The Ma Gantry Gang”’ (10-
11 p.m.). When Barrett rides the train in search of the criminals, he gets into a desperate battle for survival with Ma Gantry and her men.
Howard, who has appeared on Broadway and in television, stars as Dave Barrett, an ex-Marine in the 1930s who becomes a crime fighter following the death of a close friend in a bank robbery. He uses his training as a backwoods hunter to track the gangs of the period.
THE PREMIERE episode was filmed on location in and around Denver, Colo., and much of the action takes place aboard an operating standard-gauge, steam-powered train.
