It's 1990, Alan is 15 and craving independence and excitement. His sense of self is emerging like a butterfly as he learns to stand up for himself, has an image overhaul, gets a job, and finds a place to feel free that gives him new hope.
This growing confidence encourages Alan to take on new challenges, leading him not only to the birdwatching hide at the local reservoir but also tantalisingly close to a coach heading to Paris. However, it's an unexpected lifeline from Blackpool - and a broken washing machine - that ultimately gives Alan some much-needed answers. With his best friend Kay by his side, plus an inspiring drag queen, a friendly twitcher, and some sympathetic neighbours guiding him, Alan realises the journey of self discovery is not one he has to make alone.
