When an international flight lands at Boston's Logan Airport and the passengers and crew have all died grisly deaths, FBI Special Agent Olivia Dunham is called in to investigate. After her partner is nearly killed during the investigation, a desperate Olivia searches frantically for someone to help, leading her to Dr. Walter Bishop, our generation's Einstein. There's only one catch: he's been institutionalized for the last twenty years, and the only way to question him requires pulling his estranged son Peter in to help. When Olivia's investigation leads her to a manipulative corporate executive, she and her team will discover that what happened on Flight 627 is only a small piece of a larger, more shocking truth and will explore the blurring line between the possible and the impossible.

Fox ordered 23 episodes for season 1 but ended up only having 22 slots to air it. So this one got held over.
It is best placed between Episode 16 ("Unleashed") and Episode 18 ("Midnight") of Season 1, according to most sources, despite the production number making it look like it should be after the final episode.
On all my rewatches, I keep trying to find the perfect place to put this in season 1 so it doesn't feel out of place like it usually does.
I tried end of season 1, which is where the production numbers say it should go; that was a terrible idea. I tried late season 1 between episodes 17 and 18 (a suggestion I found on a reddit thread); that still felt way too late. On my latest try, I put it between episodes 13 and 14; this still feels too late for some reason. The episode doesn't reference any of the stuff that Fringe has been trying hard to get off the ground in the latter half of season 1, like Massive Dynamics, Olivia seeing John, her sister, Peter's murky past, etc.
In really trying to pay attention to the flow of season 1, I think this is really a very, very early season 1 episode before any of that starts to take off. I've decided to stick it between episodes 5 and 6 for my next watch and I think it'll go good there with the early simple monster-of-the-week episodes without any attachment to the larger plotline, which the very first few episodes don't really have.
If anyone watches it there for their next rewatch, let me know. I'm curious how it feels to someone else.
Strange to see Charlie Francis alive in this episode because he was killed in season 1 and the shapeshifter who took his appearance died also in season one.
