At last Mary comes face to face with her guardian, her Uncle Archibald Craven , the cold and remote owner of Misselthwaite Manor, but an even stranger meeting takes place that night.

Mary's growing happiness at Misselthwaite, her pleasure in the hidden garden and her friendship with Dickon conflict with her new-found cousin Colin's wishes-with tempestuous results.

In spring, Colin's health and temper improve so fast that Mary and Dickon feel they can share the garden with him. They take him there, but find they are not quite alone....
