Nils Storås has lived most of his life up on the small farm Sulabakk, the only roadless farm that is still inhabited on Sunnmøre. As a Sunnmøring, he is frugal, thrifty and inventive, and the goal is to be self-sufficient. To do this, he has created the strangest aids. Nils Storås is full of invention and humour, and most of all he laughs at himself. But at the bottom lies the seriousness.

If Eva and Kjell Ryvang are to travel from home, they should warn about Sweden. Their home is at the end of a six kilometer long lake, which is half Swedish, half Norwegian, and the lake is the only navigable road to and from Sylen. But in spring and autumn, when the ice is unsafe, the people of Sylen are isolated from the outside world. Just as full, it was here they wanted to come in, after having had enough of the stress and hustle and bustle in the city. Oddgeir Bruaset has met the Ryvang family, whose livelihood is tourism.

I'm stuck here, says Lars Finden, farmer on the Finden beach farm in Finnafjorden in Sogn, where Oddgeir Bruaset takes us this time. For a time, sixty people lived in the small hamlet, now Lars Finden is alone, together with two minor children. Here he makes a living from goat herding and tourism, and he is doing well. But the nearest neighbor is a half-hour boat ride away.

Kjeåsen lies on a mountain shelf, 530 steep meters above the Hardangerfjord. The old path to the farm was so difficult to walk that half of those who tried turned back. The Oslo girl Bjørg Wiik also climbed up here. She wanted to take care of her aunt, the last one still alive up on the mountain shelf. But after her aunt died, Bjørg stayed. She had discovered that Kjeåsen had something that the big city could never give her. Oddgeir Bruaset has met the woman who still lives at Kjeåsen, alone and at the age of 70.

We live below the poverty line, but it is not a lack of money that is our biggest problem. The difficulties we have encountered with the governing authorities are worse, says Tommy Rodahl. Together with his wife, he said goodbye to city life and moved to a depopulated fishing village far west in the sea. Now the two have become four, says the presenter, Oddgeir Bruaset.

I want to use my hands for something other than moving paper, said Stavanger boy Kjell Michelsen to himself. Then he turned his back on the office and city life, moved to Trodla-Tysdal, changed his name and called himself Kjell Tysdal, and became a sheep farmer and tourist host. Gaundalen, a mountain farm in North Trondheim near the Swedish border, where a mother, Ingeborg Gaundal (82) and a son, Steinar (51), live. Three mile footpath to the nearest neighbour. To solve the communication problem, Steinar has built an airstrip behind the barn and bought a private plane.

Givær is a small island community in the Vestfjorden, an hour's journey by speedboat from Bodø. 14 people live here when they are fully grown, but during Lofoten fishing, only the women remain. Olaug Olsen (29) is one of them. After being away for ten years, she has returned home to take over her parents' small farm.

Styvi in the Nærøyfjorden, a lonely beach farm along one of the most famous fjord arms in the country. Here, Botolv Hov (82) lives alone in the winter, the only permanent resident on a roadless farm along the Nærøyfjord. In the summer, he is joined by his wife, and together they have built up an extensive farm museum.

Risberget is a small farm in Finnskogen where the married couple Liv and Trond Burud have settled. They lived in Oslo and worked in the computer industry, but had enough of the hustle and bustle and broke away. Now they make a living by making handicraft products from wood and by raising tussock and reed. The salary is halved, but they feel richer than before.

Revelsøy, a former trading center in the Ofotfjord, where 85-year-old Alma Jenssen lives completely alone, and she has done so for more than 30 years. For 50 years she has looked after a roadless beacon, now she is content to be a church servant in the chapel at the old burial ground. She fishes for her own use, and a couple of times a week she goes to the mainland for food and mail - if she doesn't sit down.

Kwipt, a previously roadless and abandoned mountain farm in West Telemark. One of those who moved from the farm at a young age, Åsmund Kvipt, returned with his family ten years ago, built a road, demolished the houses and decided to become a farmer. In the city there was tourism. Now he has built a row of houses in the old style, and in one of them, a storehouse, his wife, Janne Sætre Fjellheim, has a pottery workshop.

At the bottom of a fjord arm in Tana, 75-year-old Charles Jensen lives with a dog and two horses, miles from the nearest neighbour, with no road connection to the outside world. But Charles is a tough guy who lives his life in solitude or who goes off the road to spend the night in a self-made tent in the mountains on a winter's day.

Eikemo is a small hamlet in a mountain valley on the roadless side of the Åkrafjord in Sunnhordland. Six people live there, among them two young and unmarried goat farmers. But if Eikemo is to have a future, they need a wife. The hope is that one or more of the budei who run the støl on Eikemo summer days will stay on after the støl's life is over.

In Vassvika in Sjunkfjorden, a few miles north of Bodø, live two fishing families. They lack a road, and they lack a quay. If it rains, or if the fjord is full of ice, they are completely isolated. While the guys are fishing, two women are alone in Vassvika. One is 95 years old, the other 25 - and comes from China.

On Bleikøya just outside Oslo harbor live Berit and Christian Gulbrandsen, the only permanent residents on the islands at the entrance to Oslo. Their house is three hundred years old, the road to the pier is a bad footpath, and many a winter they are isolated when there is ice on the fjord. The man is completely in need of care, but still they cannot imagine moving.

In Sihccajavri on Finnmarksvidda lives fellow girl Mari Anne Kumpulainen Vanhaphia, a child of nature who lives off what nature has to offer, and who foregoes socializing with other young people in order to be at home. Her husband is a Finnish reindeer owner, and since he cannot move his animals across the border, they live in separate places.

On Kvebergsøya in Folldal, Martin Kjønsberg, former headmaster, and Eris Davids, originally from Germany, have settled down on an ancient farm and started a new life. The horse is central to their lives, whether they use it as a working animal in the forest and in the fields, they ride in the mountains, or they go on a sleigh ride across the winter expanses.

Fifteen years ago, Per Sørflaten started a new life. He didn't want to be a slave to the clock and the machine anymore. Instead, he sought peace and freedom in the wilderness of Laksfjordvidda in Finnmark. Here he lives in a house that is somewhere between an old house and a Viking house, and although he has a past as a power plant machinist, he has no electricity or water installed.

Elin Skålid and Tor Bolstad Jensen, together with their three minor children, have settled down on the lonely, abandoned mountain farm Skålid in Fyresdal, where Elin's father came from. There they dig up land, build houses and power plants there and invest in cattle breeding. But the best room in the old house must be without electricity. They will have a sound studio there!

On Litle Færøy in Solund municipality lives the juniper farmer Roar Moe. Together with a group of friends, he has taken over and restored an old homestead. Now he lives there to give school pupils and other young people who come by an insight into the old coastal culture, at sea and on land.

22-year-old Nils Christian Gjefsjø has recently taken over his father's farm, Gjevsjøen, on the Swedish border in Nord-Trøndelag. He lives there with his parents. If he is going to Snåsa, the nearest village, he must walk three miles over the mountain. Or he can travel by boat and car through Sweden, a detour of 25 miles.

In Åsligrenda west of Dokka in Oppland, Kari Nøssvold runs a small farm together with her mother. An aunt and an uncle live a short distance away. More are not yet in the once so populous mountain hamlet. But now Kari has got a boyfriend from Oslo, and soon she will become a mother.

Three years ago, the 55-year-old family man Oddbjørn Selnes returned to his childhood home on Flatøy in Troms, an island with no route connections of any kind. There he lives as a fish farmer. The only person living there when he arrived was an elderly woman in need of care. His family did not join, but they respect him for what he did.

Geirr Vetti calls himself a family doctor. The bachelor loves old houses, and after he was allowed to take over a dilapidated mountain shelf farm in Luster in Sogn, he has had enough to do. He builds many of the houses again in stone, and to provide all the stone he needs, he has had the help of two Sherpas from Nepal. The aim is to start farming in the old fashioned way.

Ivanir Hasson, half Norwegian, half Jewish, lived a wandering life until he came to rest on a deserted mountain farm in Tinn in Telemark. One day she met Carl Olsen, a street clown from New Zealand. They married in a monastery church by Tinnsjøen, and he moved into her small farm. But much of the year they travel around and hold circus classes for Norwegian schoolchildren.

The tiny cluster yard on Indre Fure faces the open Stadhavet. Seven people have clawed their way here, and they have stayed, despite big storms and heavy loads, despite steep hills and difficult roads. They tell of a life of hardship, of the struggle for food and the struggle against the forces of nature and social development. But they don't want to be anywhere else.

Skåro is a lonely, roadless farm high above Fyksesund in Hordaland. One man still lives here, the more than 80-year-old Jon J. Skaar. And he intends to stay, even if the ladder down to the fjord is not clear on a winter's day, and even the mile-long arm of the fjord sometimes freezes over, so that the man is completely isolated. The only company he has are two marten.

Physiotherapist Sisco and computer scientist Karl Viggo Waldersløv had enough of queues and stress in the capital. They sold all eight of them and settled on a lonely, steep-sided farm in Vågå. And here they enjoy life to the fullest. The physiotherapist nevertheless accepts people who benefit from massages and hot baths, and the computer specialist helps the young people so that they can live at home while they study.

Nyksund was one of the big fishing villages in Vesterålen, but when the boats got bigger, the harbor became too small, and the people moved. One day the houses were still in disrepair. But a few years ago, the city was rediscovered. Young female artists in particular felt attracted to the outpost by the ocean. The girls in Nyksund are close to each other, and they rejoice over their new life and new hometown.

In the wilderness of Graddisfjellet in Nordland live the aging Swedish artist couple Kajsa Zetterquist and Per Adde. There they have built up a yard of ancient houses, and here they live for each other and for art. But they are also involved in society and have made a great effort both for Northern Norwegian artists and for the Sami.

Kjepso is a roadless farm on a mountain shelf on the north side of the Hardangerfjord. Here Anne from Glasgow became a farm wife, and here she brought up five children, while her husband was a weekday commuter. Now the retired couple Anne and Per Kjepso live alone on the cliff for most of the year, but during the holidays the young people return, and then there are games and fun, songs and music in the yard and in the living room around the clock.

In the small hamlet of Måren on the north side of the Sognefjord, only five people still live. One of them is the author, music announcer and smallholder Ivar Orvedal. Every other summer he organizes a music and poetry festival, the Måren Biennale, but after he lost a long-running battle last summer to prevent the development of the Mårenvassdraget, the future has become uncertain.

Twelve-year-old Anita Martinsen lives with her parents in the Fossdal mountain range, on the border between Møre and Romsdal and Sør-Trøndelag. Her friends are the animals on the farm, especially the goats and the many poultry. In addition, she writes stories about animals and has attended author's courses. And she has her plans ready. She will become an author, veterinarian and mountain farmer.

The people in Skjerdal in Nordfjord are roadless, but still lead an active life. In addition to normal farm work, they have raised trotting horses and set up a salmon farm, they hunt deer on a grand scale, and now they are building a power plant. But life in Skjerdal can also be dramatic. Last year, father and son had an accident with the milk boat, the farm was isolated by sea ice, and a large floe kept traveling with the house.

The fjord is as enchanting as the cluster of houses in the fjord bottom. Once, 300 people lived in Kirkefjorden in Lofoten. Now Oddvar Berntsen is the only one who is still in the winter. In Bunesfjorden, which runs parallel to Kirkefjorden, the situation is about the same. Outside, and behind the huge Bunessanden, lies a lonely little house by the sea. An elderly lady from Gothenburg has to go out there every single summer, even though the city is both roadless, waterless and powerless.

In the wilderness west of Femunden, Milda and Klas Femundshytten still live alone. When Klas grew up, fishing and catching were the basis of life. Now they count on their pensions by welcoming tourists who are served food in the barn, stories about mother Olave who gave birth in the barn, and stories from the time Femundshytta was an under-use during the copper works on Røros. But the biggest atmosphere is created by the cargo drivers when, on their way to Rørosmartnan, they enter Femundshytta with songs and games.

She grew up in the wealthy environment on the outskirts of New York - and she has never sat at a computer, never talked on a mobile phone or taken pictures at the wheel of a car. But she often sits behind the stingray, and evening and morning she sits on the barn stool in the light of a lantern. Jenny Endresen lives on the roadless and powerless mountain farm Moslid in Vinje in Telemark, and she lives as the farmers did a hundred years ago. The aim is to be self-help, live in harmony with nature and not destroy the earth.

City boy Knut Kastnes realized his dream of becoming a farmer when he bought the remote small farm Sæterstad in Hattfjelldal. He moved into a half-dilapidated house, he searched for an apartment, and Siri Kobberød from Trondheim came - and stayed. Together, they have transformed Sæterstad into a state farm. In one barn, they breed char and prepare razor fish for sale, and in another barn the goats supply raw material for what becomes a dozen types of cheese, the cheese at home on the farm.

She lives in a house in the forest by Homevassevje, in an old watchman's house by the disused Setesdalsbanen. She is a painter, and in the summer she stands outside and paints in flowered boots and otherwise nothing. If it hadn't been for the snake, she would have thrown the boots away. Kirsten Lundsgaardvig is Danish and colorful. She is also Catholic, and has even received the last oil. In addition, she lives in a team of thirteen rallars. They are all dead, but keep her just as full of good company.

Severin Rønes is 25 years old and says that he is like most young people. But he has settled down on a roadless, depopulated family farm by the Storfjorden in Sunnmøre. Here the Einebuaren lives as a sheep farmer and herder, he hunts deer and foxes and catches martens and gray cat. Last winter his boat was broken down during a big storm, and later the quay went the same way. But Severin did not give up. Now he clears forests to get the cultural landscape on the farm and on the farm in order.

In 1990, five people died in a tragic plane crash on Værøy in Lofoten. After that, the vulnerable airport was closed. A good ten years later, Remi Johansen, a young man from Værøy, bought the airport and turned it into his home. Ola Braanaas is rich, but he is not like most rich people. He lives alone in a converted farmhouse on an islet in the sea, Svinøyna in Gulen. He has spent NOK 35 million to save an old trading town from decay, and he does not expect to get it back. It is better to spend the money on culture, on something that lasts, than to waste it on the stock exchange, says Braanaas.

Else Juliussen from the most deserted seaside hamlet of Hasfjord in Finnmark is a colorful woman and a Good Samaritan.

They live on one of the highest farms in the country, and they live three miles from the nearest road. Anne Gro was heavily pregnant when she and Åsmund moved to Argehovd in Møsstrond, his family farm, more than twenty years ago. The Løvås couple have lived there from sheep farming and tourism, and there they have brought up two daughters, who had to live in a boarding school for all their school years. Neither the parents nor the girls are sorry that they chose Argehovd.

Tore Amarius has lived a turbulent life, with drugs, violence and broken relationships as some of the ingredients. When he became a Buddhist, life took a new turn. Now he lives with his wife and son as the only permanent residents on Nordre Sandøy in Hvaler, and there he and Lene have tried to get young people from a difficult background on the right track. But in the summer three years ago, something dramatic happened that would once again make life difficult for Tore Amarius.

Marit Kvam and Arnfinn Lislien met at an agricultural school. They were to become farmers. But instead of finding a large and easy-to-run farm, they chose a steep and stony small farm on the roadless side at the top of Romsdalen. In the hills of Brulia, the scythe and the rake are still important travel companions. In addition, they fall on one seat, while they have their legs on another. They do it to keep the traditions alive and the cultural landscape intact.

Tønne's Martin Dyrskog grew up on a roadless farm by Ørsdalsvatnet in Bjerkreim in Rogaland, but after an accident he moved to another remote farm, Røysland, in Lund municipality. But one day the Ausland woman broke with the hectic life she was living and sought shelter at Litløy lighthouse in Bø in Vesterålen. Here she lives with two cats, but now she plans to start tourism, so that more people can share in the paradise she has found.

Arne Bakke Mælen had a share in the remote small farm Mælen in Jondal in Hardanger. But the slopes were steep, and when he took over, the houses were falling down. Instead of working the land, he turned the yard into an art and culture centre, with a gallery, party room and workshop. He himself is a craftsman who works with wood, and who takes impressive pictures and spins matchless balls.

Ingvar Aabrek Klingenberg, village boy from Trondheim, former museum director and art historian, has settled in a small remote cabin in Hitra, where the family had a holiday resort. He has no running water, he has no road to the yard, he cooks his food on grass, and what little electricity he has, he gets from a solar panel. But there Klingenberg sits and writes literary works about art history.

Yvonne and Ole Jacob Christensen run the small farm Vikabråten in Vestre Slidre, and they run it as it was run in the interwar period. He found himself a Norwegian girl, took her surname and settled on a dilapidated, roadless farmstead in Valdres. Now Inger Norunn and Rainer Solhaug have transformed the homestead into a fairytale farm, where they also make a living, she as a silversmith, he as a woodworker.

Olaug Pettersen lives alone in an otherwise abandoned fishing village in the far north of Bjarkøy municipality in Troms. In the course of four years, she lost three of her closest friends. The man died of health problems, while two sons died in separate accidents at sea. All three lie in the churchyard at Meløyvær, and it is the three graves that bind her to the town. But Olaug has fought through adversity and finds joy in everyday life.

Magnhild Snaprud from Søgne and Christoffer Christensen from Denmark found each other when they went on the outdoor line at Høgskulen in Telemark. They have taken over the decommissioned mountain farm Listøl in Åseral in Vest-Agder. Magnhild is a teacher down in the village and uses a wheeled sled when she sets off on the school road on a winter's day, while Christoffer has fallen in love with old timber houses and does restoration work.

As a pensioner, nostalgic Leif Birger Hagen is moving back to his childhood island, the abandoned fishing village of Brattværet on the North Sea coast, after a long life in a fishing boat. In the weather, he tries to find those happy childhood years, at the same time as he went out with his shark, "Hurragutten", and fishes with drugs. After a long life as a bachelor, he has also got a lady, a flame from his youth, you must know.

Klara and Einar Hårstad live at the mountain farm Lysvatnet on the Fosenhalvøya in Trøndelag. The distance to the nearest neighbor is 11 kilometers without roads. Hunting, fishing and outdoor life are what occupied Einar the most, and he could not have imagined a better and freer life. It was painful to send the children to school, Klara thinks. Now they are happy that a son will follow in their footsteps.

Lars-Erik Jacobsen has put his love into everything that is old. As a 15-year-old, he joined a history team, where there were only pensioners, and when he was 20 he bought the roadless, steep-sided and dilapidated mountain farm Skrepprud far north in Numedal. He has lived there for almost 40 years, and everything he puts aside from his teaching salary, he uses to buy old houses and household items and moves everything to his home.

They live there with their teenage daughter, Dag works there as a woodcutter, they have built their own chapel there, and both game and predators roam the yard.

As children of the 68 generation, Bente Thurmann-Nielsen and Tormod Skeie found a small mountain farm in Ryfylke and were going to make a living from it. They stayed, but he earned his living in a library, she at school. Now they have retired. He looks after the small farm, while she runs her own travel company and ships on cultural trips, in the local area as well as to Florence and Rome.

Hege and Helge Nordskar come from Oslo, but live and breathe for outdoor life and wildlife. First they created the wilderness garden Langedrag, and after an interlude as souvenir producers in Lommedalen, they have now built a fairy garden at the entrance to Jotunheimen. At Glittersjå, they enjoy mountain life together with wild boar and goats, Scottish highland cattle and Andalusian shepherd horses.

The mountain shelves along the Storfjorden on Sunnmøre have been empty of people for more than a century. But then Kari-Anne Nilsen moved up to one of the wards, Ytste Skotet. At first she was there in the summer and taught children and young people about old farm life. Later, she lived on the roadless and electricityless farm with a horse and dog, a couple of cats, some sheep and a flock of chickens.

Bente Getz took over a small, roadless small farm that had long had a barn in Samnanger. She got dairy sheep and started making sheep's cheese, she made her own bakery, and she sold weeds as salad to finer restaurants in Bergen. The turnover has now passed the million mark.

The nursing couple Stine and Per-Sverre Engdal are fond of outdoor life, and they have bought a small mountain farm in Hattfjelldal. They wanted to combine agriculture with green care. But the fourth child they had was multi-handicapped. Then they changed their plans, became foster parents and took in two more children.

Terjer Hidle took over the farm at home at Nord-Hidle in Boknafjorden and runs sheep farming, farm tourism and Christmas tree production. A rare breed of sheep keeps her Christmas tree fields free of weeds. Erling, her husband, is now building a health clinic on the farm, based on food that is not fried or boiled.

30 years ago, Gaby from the Faroe Islands and Rupert from Germany came to Tinn with horse and prairie wagon. Since then, they have run the steeply sloping small farm Skifterud without mechanized aids, and the aim is to be self-sufficient. In addition, the troubadour Derben travels on tour - with horse and carriage.

Katrine and Bjarne live on the solitary farm Høttmon in Meråker, and they have taken their name from the farm. Katrine is a musician, the two children she has follow in their mother's footsteps, and the house is filled with music - and inventions. Bjarne is a sheep farmer, but it seems that the bear and the wolverine have become too close.

The Danish priest Erik Rostbøll, together with wife Kirsten, has built a house and home on an old seat in Valdres. Erik became a priest even though he has not studied theology, and even though he has been divorced twice - from two sisters. Up in the yard they have built a church, after Kirsten received a revelation to do so.
