Kjeåsen lies on a mountain shelf, 530 steep meters above the Hardangerfjord. The old path to the farm was so difficult to walk that half of those who tried turned back. The Oslo girl Bjørg Wiik also climbed up here. She wanted to take care of her aunt, the last one still alive up on the mountain shelf. But after her aunt died, Bjørg stayed. She had discovered that Kjeåsen had something that the big city could never give her. Oddgeir Bruaset has met the woman who still lives at Kjeåsen, alone and at the age of 70.

One of those who moved from the farm at a young age, Åsmund Kvipt, returned with his family ten years ago, built a road, demolished the houses and decided to become a farmer. In the city there was tourism. Now he has built a row of houses in the old style, and in one of them, a storehouse, his wife, Janne Sætre Fjellheim, has a pottery workshop.

But life in Skjerdal can also be dramatic. Last year, father and son had an accident with the milk boat, the farm was isolated by sea ice, and a large floe kept traveling with the house.

The fjord is as enchanting as the cluster of houses in the fjord bottom. Once, 300 people lived in Kirkefjorden in Lofoten. Now Oddvar Berntsen is the only one who is still in the winter. In Bunesfjorden, which runs parallel to Kirkefjorden, the situation is about the same. Outside, and behind the huge Bunessanden, lies a lonely little house by the sea. An elderly lady from Gothenburg has to go out there every single summer, even though the city is both roadless, waterless and powerless.

In the wilderness west of Femunden, Milda and Klas Femundshytten still live alone. When Klas grew up, fishing and catching were the basis of life. But the biggest atmosphere is created by the cargo drivers when, on their way to Rørosmartnan, they enter Femundshytta with songs and games.

City boy Knut Kastnes realized his dream of becoming a farmer when he bought the remote small farm Sæterstad in Hattfjelldal. He moved into a half-dilapidated house, he searched for an apartment, and Siri Kobberød from Trondheim came - and stayed. Together, they have transformed Sæterstad into a state farm. In one barn, they breed char and prepare razor fish for sale, and in another barn the goats supply raw material for what becomes a dozen types of cheese, the cheese at home on the farm.

She lives in a house in the forest by Homevassevje, in an old watchman's house by the disused Setesdalsbanen. Kirsten Lundsgaardvig is Danish and colorful. She is also Catholic, and has even received the last oil. In addition, she lives in a team of thirteen rallars. Severin Rønes is 25 years old and says that he is like most young people. But he has settled down on a roadless, depopulated family farm by the Storfjorden in Sunnmøre. Here the Einebuaren lives as a sheep farmer and herder, he hunts deer and foxes and catches martens and gray cat. Last winter his boat was broken down during a big storm, and later the quay went the same way. But Severin did not give up. Now he clears forests to get the cultural landscape on the farm and on the farm in order.

In 1990, five people died in a tragic plane crash on Værøy in Lofoten. After that, the vulnerable airport was closed. Anne Vågen Skindalen lives in a mountain valley on Hardangervidda together with three or four cows. She gets her income by churning butter and selling it to the convenience store in Rauland - three miles away. In the winter she drives a snowmobile, in the summer she rides a quad bike, before she has to hire a man with a boat and a car. In spring and autumn, hoes can be isolated for weeks. But in Skindalen she will stay all her days until the end.

Bjarkøy

Olaug Pettersen lives alone in an otherwise abandoned fishing village in the far north of Bjarkøy municipality in Troms. In the course of four years, she lost three of her closest friends. The man died of health problems, while two sons died in separate accidents at sea. All three lie in the churchyard at Meløyvær, and it is the three graves that bind her to the town. But Olaug has fought through adversity and finds joy in everyday life.
